Being forced to accept the Treaty of Calais to maintain his position as King, King John of France gave up ownership of the Duchy of Guyenne (Aquitaine). It was about one third the size of France at the time. This marked the end of the war The Treaty of Bretigny (shown in this picture) was proposed on May 8th, 1360, and ratified in October 24th, 1360. This treaty divvied France into the land shown in the picture, both countries making a trade of land. It is said to be the start of the first phase of the Hundred Years’ War.

From A.D. 1347 - 1350, a disease known more commonly as the "Black Death" plagued Europe. Over one third of the population was wiped out clean. The disease slowed down after 5 years, and in A.D. 1352 it was no longer a huge threat. The people at the time believed it to be "God's Divine Punishment", as they couldn't understand how a disease could be so potent. They had no idea of how to stop it, and they just had to let it spread. Over the next few generations, the disease did make small appearances, but they did not have the same effect as the original plague.
