Dear Senator Stabenow,     
         
Sea level rise is rising and we need to go more green to sustain our coastal areas. I love visiting places like our lakes, playing on the beach, seeing coastal cities, etc. I bet you like vacations and the beach too! What if that was to all disappear soon because of sea level rise? Not only that but animals and people lost their homes from global warming and sea level rise. This is a terrible thing and many habitats and cities are endangered at the moment.
     Sea level rising is impacting everyone. This is not just an “us” problem, it’s world wide and we can stop it from happening.  Sea level rise can be caused by multiple things.  One way is the arctic becoming warmer due to global warming which then causes melting of the ice and a rise in the sea level. The sea level also rises when oceans become warmer and expand. With global warming on the rise, soon the arctic will be gone and the coastal areas will be under water along with so many homes. This could affect millions of people.         
     Here's some problems that are happening right now: “Thawing permafrost and erosion has increased flooding risks and caused the land around homes to crumble and sink. The community landfill has washed away, fuel storage tanks are damaged, and some houses have already been torn down because they were in danger of collapsing.``(Climate Change Has Finally Caught up To This Alaska Village). This shows that even if we try to freeze the arctic with permafrost, it will just melt again and make sea level rise worse. Erosions will occur and it just will not be good and we need to make a move fast! Here's some more evidence: “Since then, climate change has warmed the planet and started thawing the frozen ground that sits below the surface across the far north. Melting permafrost is causing roads, pipelines, and building foundations to crack while also releasing more greenhouse gasses. “ (Climate Change Has Finally Caught up To This Alaska Village). This is appalling for the earth and us. If we keep letting CO2 in the atmosphere, global warming will only get worse and our polar caps will continue to melt.  This will create a huge problem with wildlife in the region and could cause some wildlife to become extinct like polar bears and penguins.  Also, sea level rise can cause really bad storm surge which causes mass flooding in coastal areas.   
     There are many ways that we can solve this problem.  One way is to have the government work together with businesses to limit the burning of fossil fuels.  We could also use more solar power.  Another solution would be to start planting trees and greenery because plants take up CO2 from the atmosphere and store that carbon in their trunks, stems and leaves, so the more plants, the less CO2 to worry about. All of these would help to reduce the effects of global warming which will have a great impact on oceans and polar ice caps. This can reduce sea level rise and save our coastal cities, our homes and most importantly our people and wildlife.   
     With so much on the line, I am writing to you to request your help on sea level rise.  We need all of the help that we can get! If we can get the rest of the world to see the damage that this can cause and the solutions that we can do, I think more people would come together and help prevent sea level rise.
