The first nation to have used the mortars during the World War One was Germany at the very beggining of the war in 1914 . The mortars were built in the years of 1908-9. They were first put to use when Germany was fighting at the French front.

The artillery was used in World War One as a form of attack around the time of the trench warefare . The artillery was first used by the United Sates. It was one of the weapons that could use at first hand.

The mortar has traditonally been used as a weapon to propel explosive bombs in high-arcing ballistic trajectories that were dropped straight down into the enemy lines , they were used in seige warfare for more than 400 years.

The artillery of world war 1 was used to counter the trench warfare. Artillery was now able to shoot farther with more explosive shells so because of that enemies in trenches would no longer be safe and would be fired upon

More than any other World War 1 weapon, the artillery inflicted the most casualties. During the time of World War 1, about 14,000 types of artillery were used. Most of the time they were used for infantry attacks (foot soldiers). A large part of the shells were fired to their enemies in hope that they would land in their trenches or at least hit the target.
It's advantage was that it could fire from a trench with out being exposed to the enemy. The mortar is also much lighter that an artillery. When there was a war and both sides had an equal amount of weaponry and mortars, the effect the weapons would have would be highly deadly.
(Also there was poison gas)

(This is a WW1 artillery)
