I would let the student know that it is inappropriate to laugh. I would use the other students question to open a conversation as a class. It is important to take the attention off of that specific student and instead facilitate a conversation about respect and divers families.

First ask the student if they want to talk about their experiences with their classmates, then tell the other students that laughing is an unkind way to respond to someone’s lived experience. Show empathy and offer examples about how all families are valid, and say that all families look different. Include a lesson later in the year about how we can see other types of families from a welcoming and curious perspective

I would ignore the student laughing and address the question. I’d enforce them to think of different family dynamics and that not one type of parent dynamic is ‘normal’.

Explain to the student that families can be made up of different people, and not all families are alike

explain to students that everyone’s family situation looks different. some people can have two moms, or two dads. others can be taken care of by grandparents or aunts/uncles

I would ask the student who laughed, why they think that having two moms is funny. And I would emphasize to them that having two parents or guardians who love you is a very special thing that not all children have. And I would probably read some stories about children who don’t have a typical family demographic.

I would correct the laughing child's behavior. I would also bring in different books about "non-traditional families"

I would take this as a learning opportunity for all of my students to teach and educate them on the diverse range of families and not everyone is going to be from the same background as them.
