The Second Shift

More often than not, women are expected to work a "second shift" after a day of work. The second shift is a term that means that employed mothers are expected to complete more unpaid household labor than men. According to an article I read, "Results indicate focal mothers' total workloads are greater than fathers by a week-and-a-half, not an "extra month" per year" (Milkie et al. 1). Overall, women feel more pressure to complete these household tasks than men do.

The Gender Pay Gap

The gender pay gap is the difference in financial earnings between men and women. According to the article I read, the gender pay gap has been stable for the past 15 years. It explains how women earned 84% of what men earned in 2020. That means it would take women to work an extra 42 days to earn what men did. This is extremely unfair considering how women are working just as hard as men. This discrimination of pay is solely based on gender and must be fixed.

Given Lower-Paying Positions

Frequently, women are given a lower position than men. Some jobs only hire women for certain jobs and prefer men work some positions. Sometimes women will not even be hired due to their gender. Some women are even evaluated throughout the job more thoroughly than men and sometimes even denied a promotion. This also goes along with race and women. Women can be denied promotions, better pay, etc. because of gender and race.

A big problem in the workplace that women face is sexual harassment. Whether it be sexual jokes or physical touch, it happens very often. Although there are many protections in place in an attempt to limit this, it is significantly overlooked. Many women are exposed to undesired sexual advances from coworkers, which must be combatted.

Many women experience discrimination by social and economic factors including marginalized groups of women. According to an article I read, "Racial discrimination against black workers makes up approximately 26 percent of workplace discrimination claims" (Roebig 1). Also, Kimberlé Crenshaw calls this "double discrimination" when one is being discriminated against regarding both sex and race. People experience discrimination regarding pay, parental and sick leave, etc.
