REFLECTION

I chose this one out of the other two options I had. The main reason I chose this is because most of the time I let fear take over my thoughts and stop me from doing certain things. And I want to prevent that from happening. So after finding this quote, I would repeat it whenever I'm scared. This way, it tells me that my fear is valid because the human brain is wired to think whether something is safe for us or not, and then starts the fight or flight response whenever it thinks something is not. So this tells me to calm down and go on with something, despite being scared of it. And so far it has worked, so that is why I wanted to choose this quote.

I chose these photos mostly because of what is in them, some of them have planes, or mountains, which are a great symbol of fear. Because one of the most common fears that I know is the fear of heights. So to go against that fear, I chose photos that might make sense, to just be scared but do it anyway. Like I am not the biggest fan of flying, yet I've been on multiple plane rides, alone and with my family. And mountains, as pretty as they are, are also kind of dangerous. One wrong step and everything might go downhill (literally). Yet I still went to Nepal for my GAP trip. So most of the photos I've chosen are in some way me facing one or another fear or worry I had when I was there taking the photo.

I chose these photos for inspiration because the scenery is what is taking up almost all of the wallpaper, but the quote is also not hidden. Like in the last two, the quote has its box and is right in the middle of the wallpaper making it the first thing we see. I like the idea of that because the purpose of an inspirational wallpaper is to inspire you. And if the scenery is the first thing our eyes see, it might not necessarily be inspirational. But if the quote was the first thing we saw then the scenery, then we would be inspired and showered by beauty. So that's why I chose these inspirations because I think they do this the best.

I chose these fonts because they are pretty, and some are borderline cute, but they are still pretty hardcore, and symbolize resilience pretty well. So I kind of show the two sides of my quote, like yeah fear is not the best thing in the world it is probably one of the things you should avoid, but it's normal. Everyone feels fear. All we can do is pick ourselves up and continue forward despite the fear that maybe weighing us down a bit, which can be symbolized by the pretty or cute side of the font.

I see that Carson's way of using colors and fonts is very abstract. The poster does not seem very intentional with all the colors going all over the place with pieces of scrap paper, but at the same time, it seems very intentional, still getting its point across.

What rules of words/letters do you see him intentionally breaking?

Usually words a lined right next to each other so that they are very readable and easy to understand. But Carson on the other hand, intentionally places his letters all over the place. This might seem like a mess at first, but after letting your eyes finish roaming the entire poster it makes much more sense what Carson is trying to say.

What information/knowledge can you make out from the posters?

Sometimes in his posters, Carson either has some information that is said in 3-4 words, while other times it is just David Carson's name spelled out.

What visual choices can you see the artist making?

Depending on what Carson's intentions are for the poster, he seems to vary his visual choices. When he is trying to get a message across to the audience, he tends to use a less chaotic arrangement for the words, so that it is still readable. When the poster is just trying to spell his name out, he tends to use more chaotic ways, like the poster attached to this post, of spelling it out. Since it is not a message that the audience needs to know from looking at the poster, he tends to have more fun placing the letters in his posters.

How do you feel about the style of the work?

I really like it, because of how abstract it is, but at the same time I am not a fan of it, mainly because I cannot do that easily. The main problem for me is that even if I want things to be chaotic, I still somehow make it way too organized or thought through. Which in things like this is not helpful. So while I really admire this type of art, I cannot do it myself, not with the same amount of chaos.

What do you think is easy about using this style of work?

Something that might be easy about this is that since it is abstract, it doesn't necessarily have to be thoroughly thought through. Instead, you can just put random things in random places and it will still look great.

So my client wants something for their ice cream business. Since they are still a small business and not very well known, they want something eye-catching that would attract customers to come to their ice cream shop. But at the same time, they do want something too loud, as they don't want to ruin the vibes that we get at an ice cream shop. So they want a poster that uses bright colors, but not neon, and matches the enthusiasm of the company about ice cream. The target audience is people who are considering getting ice cream, especially little kids who seem to want ice cream the most.
