For this project, I have decided to explore the theme Identity through my interests. I have chosen this as I associate myself with my interests more rather than other forms of identity such as the nostalgia of childhood as I believe that my hobbies / interests are a big part of who I am and what I may do within the future.

Also for my target audience to be people who also enjoy the same or similar interests.

I would like to develop my creativity during this project. Therefore, I would like to explore my interests in unique ways. For instance, taking inspiration from my love of vintage furniture by turning them into fashion statements inspired by the furniture or to create garments based on the countryside and so on. I also think this will allow me to branch out more.

Overall, my final aim for this Identity project is to create a garment I like based off my interests and a dungaree pattern.

For this project I would like to visit multiple places. This includes, areas outside, shops, museums, galleries, and more.

On top of this, researching the history and designers behind my interests such as the history of embroidery, sewing, clothing and more. But I would also like to research other aspects of my interests such as what animals or insects are common within the British countryside and so on. This is because, I think developing a deeper understanding of my interests would be helpful as I can interpret the information into my designs and link more symbolism to them which may also teach others about the topic the design is based on.

Comp Shop Online.

For this Comp Shop I have focused on how the dungarees from the following 5 shops look.

H&M

Their dungarees for adults are only offered as denim. They also have a small rage of styles and only supply the brands Monki and Cos for dungarees.

The most common dungarees in H&M are losse fitted and have embroiled detail. But they do offer a straight and wide leg.

Lucy & Yak

This brand only supples women's dungarees and are mostly in the same style of dungaree but different fabric patterns. They provide plain, floral, astrology, tartan and more fabric patterns. To be more accommodating they do offer a regular or long fit.

Levi Strauss & Co

Levi has adult and children dungarees for sale with a variety of different styles. For instance, some have wide leg or a narrower shaped top of the dungaree. However, as Levi only uses denim to create their products the dungarees are all denim which could limit their range.

White Stuff

This brand mostly has fabric dungarees with multiple different styles such as a crop leg or a v neck and more. They also embrace colour, cords and busy patterns for the dungarees. Additionally, some dungarees are web only which could add to the specialty of them.

Next

Next mostly focusses on a children's range for dungarees however there are a small amount of adult dungarees. The adult dungarees are mostly simple colours with small details like scalloped edges and a complimentary fit but the children have colourful designs with embroidery and frills which I personally still find inspiring.

Inspiration from this research

Personally, this has inspired me to lean more towards linen or corduroy fabric for my designs. Also to implement a more looser fit and wide leg into my designs as they seem to be the most popular currently. Additionally, a cross strap on the back and pockets would also attract more people to my designs.

I have also decided to be more creative with shape and to explore with adding embroidery details.

For this project, I would aim for a target audience of people who are similar to me / have the same interests. This is because my project is based on my identity through my own interests such as nature, antiques, craft and more. I think this could potentially be a wide range of an audience. For instance, some could only like nature and some could only like antiques. I also think my target audience could be anyone above 16 because my interests -like embroidery- can be found among a range of generations.

Evaluation - Final Dungarees.

Firstly, I would consider that my final dungarees were completed a lot better and smoother than my toile.

When creating my final dungarees I decided to make some changes to my final design. Before dying my fabric with the flower bundle dying method, I revisited my flower bundle sample and realised the dye from the flowers had faded a huge amount. Due to this, I decided I needed a plan B because I did not want to create a garment that would fade in colour overtime. To solve this issue, I used a tie dye kit instead of flower bundle dying but I still used white cotton fabric as the base for the dye.

After dying the fabric I thought I made a mistake with my decision because the colours were very bright and mixed together a lot. However, after rinsing the dye out after 4 - 8 hours the colours no longer looked as bold and matched the colours in my design more. Even though the colours mixed together more than planned I think it still works with the design in representing different colours you can find within the nature, most importantly flowers. However, it may of been better to select a smaller range of colours such as 8 instead of 12 colours.

Another change I made to my final design is the pockets. On my final dungarees I kpet the same pockets as the toile because I genuinely liked the simple style of them.

Sewing my final dungarees was a significant improvement from my toile. In my opinion, this is because I was more experienced with the pattern and knew what each step should look like on the fabric itself. But, I did find some difficulty along the way because after dying the fabric pieces the pieces no longer matched how they did when I first cut the pieces out. I am unsure what caused this exactly.

Similarly, I did make two mistakes during sewing. Firstly, I forgot to zig zag stitch a part of the trousers. I also created a small crease again on the back attachment area of the straps but I do still think it is an improvement from my toile.

To create the embroidered flowers on the dungarees I had drawn flowers onto the dungarees while they were unswen togther then embroidered the flowers in white thread using a chain stitch. I used white so it matched the thread I was using to sew the pieces togther and it stood out against the colours more. I liked using chain stitch because I think it gave the flowers an artsy sketchy appearance. After the embroidery, I then sewn the front and back together through the trousers.

Overall, the completion of these dungarees was less challenging because of mistakes I learnt from my toile and can represent final design. But, there are areas that can be improved on such as how the trousers fit and stand.

For this project I had to create a design around the theme Self Identity. To follow this theme, I decided to portray my identity through my interests because I associate myself with them a significantly, even through fashion and so on.

During this project, I have completed a variety of research ranging from different techniques to fashion designers. To collect my research I mostly used the internet but making sure the websites were up to date and secure to ensure its reliability. By researching different topics, I learnt multiple new skills and liking for designers such as Wedgewood or clay buttons. This allowed me to develop my creative skills further which allows me to believe that the use of my research was effective.

Additionally, during this project I have been able to develop my sewing skills by learning how to sew a more intricate piece of clothing. During the journey of creating a toile and final dungarees, I learnt a lot along the way for instance I can now follow sewing pattern instructions better and improved my sewing in general. This knowledge will be useful for future projects.

Moreover, within this project I was able to improve my time management and planning skills. I did this by creating a project plan and assessing what i should do next. By following this plan it allowed me to complete my project on time. I will use this practice again on future projects.

However, there are some parts of this project that couldve gone better or needs improving. For instance I couldve given more context to chosen fashion designers or techniques. Also, there is a lack of problem solving but I believe that if there was a problem I manged to solve them as effectively as possible. For example, using a tie dye kit for the final dungarees instead of flower bundle dying.

To conclude, I think my project has been completed to good a standard but does have areas to improve on. But, I also learnt and developed a lot of skills which will be helpful towards future projects. If I were to complete this project again, I would like to be more adventurous with my designs and not be intimated by my lack of skills because i have learnt that they can also be learnt along the way. I would also research into more designers and techniques to help develop my design ideas further. In my opinion, continuing to further my time management and planning skills would also be useful.

Other than this, I believe that my final dungarees represents my identity and interests like I wanted.
