Breastfeeding has multiple health benefits for baby, mother, and the economy. The benefits for baby are increase cognitive development, bolstered immune system, decrease obesity, reduced risk of chronic disease, and much more. The benefits for mother are decreased postpartum bleeding, earlier return to  pre-pregnancy weight, decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and much more. Economic benefits are increase productivity, decrease absenteeism, increase retention, family cost savings, and decreased health care costs (Murtagh & Moulton, 2011). Currently employment has a negative effect on the duration of breastfeeding, and mothers who intend to return to work are less likely to initiative breastfeeding (Hawkins, Dow-Flesiner & Noble, 2015). At Denver Public School District, the demographics reflect the national increase of woman in the workforce with over 50% of employees that identify as woman. Last year alone over one hundred mothers went out on maternity leave. Currently the district does not have a lactation policy or procedures beyond maternity leave, and Colorado state laws. My goal is to create lactation policies and procedures as well as designated spaces for mother’s to breastfeed. Mothers should be followed up to one year to measure the length of breastfeeding as well as satisfaction of support. The significance of this goal is to create a supportive environment for mothers to breastfeed at work. Babies of employee mothers are likely to be future students to the district and contributing members to the City of Denver. Theoretically if the district can provide their mothers a safe and clean place to pump then the district and the city of Denver will economically see the benefit long term.
