Chinese state television broadcasted an angry statement on Sunday night saying that ''the U.S. side has total responsibility for this event.'' Chinese negotiators planned to press for an end to US surveillance flights near China's coast, state-run media said, citing foreign ministry officials. The EP-3 ARIES could have been repaired and flown out, but the Chinese refused to allow it. Instead, a Russian An-124 was flown in and the plane was dismantled and shipped out. The American flight crew was finally repatriated to their home base, where they received a heroes’ welcome. The United States reacted to this peacefully and we are still on good terms with China today.

In the end, a total of twenty-four crew members were released after the acceptance of the letter. Like the letter stated, a meeting between the two nations over the incident occurred on April 18-19, 2001. The Chinese did not agree to return the plane during the meeting, and the United States would not agree to limit flights outside the recognized international territorial limits of twelve miles. Several months later, on July 3, 2001, the damaged plane was returned with damage to the nose cone, propeller, engine, and antenna. It was repaired and put back into service as a reconnaissance plane in the South China Sea.

What happened? - The US navy surveillance plane and a Chinese fighter jet collided 70 nautical miles south-east of the island of Hainan early. The US aircraft made an emergency landing at an airfield in Lingshui, Hainan. The fighter, Wang Wei went M.I.A and the U.S crew had been detained and interrogated for 10 days. China had blamed the U.S. for the collision, which the Pentagon said happened over international waters. On April 11, two letters of sorry were sent by the United States to their Chinese counterparts after the Chinese military stripped the plane for any additional intelligence material that had not been destroyed. The following statement, "In view of the tragic incident and based on my discussions with your representative, we have agreed to the following actions: Both sides agree to hold a meeting to discuss the incident. My government understands and expects that our aircrew will be permitted to depart China as soon as possible. The meeting would start April 18, 2001" was stated in one of the letters. Along with the two apology letters, the U.S. had offered China assistance in searching for its missing airman. "We have been assured that all of our crew members are safe, and we understand that a Chinese aircraft and pilot are missing. We have offered any assistance necessary for the search and rescue effort," A spokeswoman for the U.S. Consulate-General in Hong Kong said. And in conclusion, "We have asked Chinese authorities to respect the integrity of the aircraft and the well-being of the crew in accordance with international guidelines. We have asked for the immediate return of the aircraft and crew," she added.
