Young Father seems to gentlemanly and suave. He’s convincing with his words and charms Young Mother easily. This makes him very likeable at first. However, when we see a ‘darker’ side of him being potentially a gambling addict or a sneaky/suspicious husband who does not reveal all his dealings to his wife, we start to feel he’s disrespectful and untrustworthy.

As a child, Boon seems curious to ask questions and interact. He talks to his father almost as an equal advising/counselling him about the consequences of his actions. This suggests Boon is very confident. However, as an adult, he seems quite resigned to a ‘loser destiny’ that he’s never going to be better than average and all he can do is dream. He is condescending to Mother at times and at others, he seems to cower in fear at her words. He doesn’t seem to see himself on level playing field with her for some reason. It could be deep down he feels a great sense of gratitude to her for raising him against all odds.

As a child -

Hes very naive and very playful. Hes an energetic mischievous little boy who just wants to play around and have fun while also breaking some house rules in the process of the playing

As Adult -

Boon seems more introverted and not that energetic. What used to be a ball of sunshine died down. In all the acts, it seems like most of time, boon seems confused and angered (Basically he's surrounded by negativity) He's also more pessimistic

As a child he didn't know why father was abusive and did not want to listen to him causing him to be stubborn and fight back. As an adult boon understands all these causing him to be alone as he does not want to be like his father

The stage direction makes the scene feel very intense and impactful. It also leaves us with a cliff hanger as the scene ends with Young Boon screaming about how he hates his father. You can feel the desperation of Boon trying to escape and his fear of his father.

The ugly scrawls remind me of Boon talking about (blood) stains in his soliloquy and even Scene 16 when Mother talks about blood being in the walls.

At the end of the scene, it’s not clear if Boon intentionally kicks the paint (it seems so). Regardless, the trigger seems trivial but it’s the breaking point for Father. He treats Boon as a prisoner maybe representing by how trapped (and strapped) he is by his debts and addiction.

Perhaps he wants time to stop (by locking down Boon) so he has time to repair the damaged, clean the stains and rebuild.

The image of boon kneeling to the tree is suggestive of a worship posture but that might be over reading.

I think there’ll be a lot of Boon screaming for help, then crying then silence. In the background we’ll hear gather hurriedly trying to remove the stains then the sound of the gate opening and mother returning, her gasp and her exchange of serious words telling father to leave at one and her probably crying as she says this and rescued Boon from the tree. Amidst her sobs, she’ll probably ask him if he’s okay and hug him hard. Both mother and child in each other’s arms crying under the tree in the dark.
