In April 16, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr was arrested and sent to jail for protesting segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. After reading a letter in the newspaper that was published by eight white clergymen the same day that king was arrested, he writes a letter back to them addressing their criticism in a respectful way. He states how he has a duty to fight for justice not only in his hometown but in Birmingham too. King outlines the ideas of nonviolent protest and demonstrates why segregation should not be tolerated.

The thematic statement is supported by the quote, "Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise fromthe bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objectiveappraisal, we must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in societythat will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights ofunderstanding and brotherhood" (7).

The text evidence to support this is, "Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear-drenched communities and in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all of their scintillating beauty"(5).

Martin Luther King Jr. makes an allusion to Socrates and his form of thinking and justifying himself. His intentions in doing so are to make the need for nonviolence clear.

The text evidence supporting this thematic statement is the quote, "You express a great deal of anxiety over our willingness to break laws. This is certainly a legitimate concern. Since we so diligently urge people to obey the Supreme Court’s decision of 1954 outlawing segregation in the public schools, at first glance it may seem rather paradoxical for us consciously to break laws" (12).
