Within 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 Mary, (occasionally Abigail) and the other girls are threatened by John Proctor and the various men of Salem (due to not telling the truth in regards to the Salem witch trials and the "witchcraft" that was apparently occurring from their claims) and are easily frightened, revealing how men seem to be dominant within the time period.

This relates to the 1940s-50s where women were told to act based upon etiquette books, be weak and feminine, and constantly listen to their husbands.

As described by an article from The Washington Post; many women are dealing with paychecks of significantly lower amounts than their male counterparts, employers viewing the long hours with low pay as, "...a sign of commitment and leadership potential," with no true reward. To add to this, the article further explains how, "Men and women are free to study what they want. But there is plenty of evidence that workplace segregation, and men's and women's differing career paths, cannot be explained away as a matter of preference." This reveals to the readers of such an article that times have truly not changed as society's ideals are still bound to the old and that men still appear to be the dominant figure in how these societies play out.
(“The Gender Pay Gap.” The Economist, The Economist Newspaper, 7 Oct. 2017, www.economist.com/news/international/21729993-women-still-earn-lot-less-men-despite-decades-equal-pay-laws-why-gender.)

This can also be tied into the pre-1920s where women were not allowed to vote. Allowing for only men to vote and decide how elections would play out without allowing the country's ideals of all forms of representation to be heard.

Historically in the real town of Salem, this trust of opinion led to the accusation of more than 200 people and led to the execution of 20. This reveals how the men of society were beginning to listen more to women despite the centuries it would take to get to where the current times lie.
