In life nobody is perfect and a lot of people like to portray themselves as so. A lot of people like to show people how perfect they are and conform to the values society holds as good however on the insdie they may not believe this action to be good or they go home and do the exact opposite. For example. when out in front of your friends, your girlfriend and you may seem to be always happy and nice to each other and expect others to look the same. Though as you arrive home, your girlfriend and you are always fighting

Hawthorne is talking about how most of time, those who see flaws in their society and environment will remain quiet and not take any action to change it. This can be seen in Hester's disapproval of Puritan society; however, she obeys their laws and accepts her punishment. It is mentioned that the birth of Pearl is the only reason she didn't rebel against their strict religious beliefs. This type of hiding can be seen in a lot of families with different political or religious beliefs. Younger, more progressive generations often have to hide their true beliefs, sexualities, etc. in order to remain safe and welcome in their families. Even though they know their families are wrong, fear or exhaustion holds them back from standing up for something.

Because of Hester's sin, the townspeople find comfort in her. Her isolation and punishment has led her to be kind to others, especially those in unfortunate circumstances, like the poor. The Puritans now see Hester as more approachable because she faced her sin and has nothing lose or judge about: "She came not as a guest, but as a rightful inmate, into the household that was darkened by trouble...Hester's nature showed itself warm and rich; a well-spring of human tenderness" (146). Hawthorne makes a comment about how its human nature to love rather than hate when something doesn't harm or bother you. He is critiquing the Puritans for claiming that all sinners be damned and looked down upon while they still treat Hester with kindness now that time has passed. He is trying to show that people are more than one thing and can't be defined by a sin they committed. Hester is very kind and giving which the Puritans use to ignore her sin.

One's intense emotions can completely consume them into being blind to reality. For example, when one is in love they are able to look past flaws and toxic traits because their intense emotions of adoration put this person on a pedestal and they can't see what is truly going on around them. We can see this in the Scarlett Letter and Chillingworth's intense emotions of betrayal and revenge. His emotions have blinded him to the evil man he has truly become by torturing Chillingworth: "It was one of those moments...when a man's moral aspect is faithfully revealed to his mind's eye" (155).

The magistrates want to remove her Scarlett letter because they realized she is more than just her sin but Hester believes it should only be removed if god chooses to remove it. I feel like they are afraid of that because they don't want people to change their point of view of their religion when something happens that isn't supposed to. If you were wearing the letter, you are supposed to be this hateful person that should be shamed, but now its like a symbol of hope.

Feelings and emotions can often lead to clouding someones judgement and lead them to making poor and impulsive decisions. I think it happens a lot with celebrities and can lead to ending some of their careers. On places like twitter many have responded to hate or differing ideals and in that moment with very impulsive comebacks and not so great word choice which can lead to some people getting offended and their reputation becoming damaged. In the Scarlet letter emotions take hold of Chillingsworth and drive him to become even more evil with his plots. " the former aspect of an intellectual and studious man, calm and quiet, which was what she remembered in him had altogether vanished, and had been succeeded by an eager, searching, almost fierce yet carefully guarded look"(153). This shows how Chillingsworth changed and how he went from an intellectual to an obsessed man who is evil.

People can be so caught up in the moment that they let things like anger take the best of them. In the moment they do not have time to think and calm themselves down, so they let their raw emotions think for them instead of their brain. An example of this could be in a sports game if someone is talking to you and they're trying to get in your head, someone may respond by acting more physical and trying to hurt them. This in the end will only negatively affect the one who didn't think, because they will be the one who will get in trouble. In the Scarlet Letter, we can see Chillingworth act this way, when he figures out what happened with Hester and the Reverend, "Ever and anon, too, there came a glare of red light out of his eyes; as if the old man's soul were on fire, and kept on smoldering duskily within his breast, until, by some casual puff of passion, it was blown into a momentary flame. (153)" In this we can see the anger and hatred within Chillingworth, described as a flame. When a little flame ignites into a bigger one, it can be seen as an explosion and in this instances an explosion of hate and anger towards Dimmesdale.

Hester is now accepted more by the town and seems to hold her own place. The book says, "None so self devoted as Hester, when pestilence stalked through the town. In all seasons of calamity, indeed, whether general or of individuals, the outcast of society at once found her place" (146). Hester conformed more to what society wanted of her and became accepted. This suggests that the Puritans are not very accepting or compassionate, however if one conforms to their idea of a perfect religious person, they can be accepted.

For example, Cheating can change a kind hearted man into an mentally fragile man. Their perspective of life would shift as they felt that they have been lied to and made a joke of. Causing them to think bad ideas of themselves resulting in emotions building up until they break. Such as Chillingworth who "the former aspect of this intellectual and studious man, calm and quiet,.. had altogether vanished, and had been succeeded by an eager, searching, almost fierce, yet carefully guarded look."(116)

Hester both builds up the courage and I also think confidence to talk to Chillingworht about Dimmesdale. This is because, it being 7 years since Pearl was born, Hester has become more open towards society, as she acts upon good deeds by nursing the ill. She starts to fit into the community by becoming severe and plain as the rest of the puritans. Now these townspeople see her scarlet letter not as a sin but more as a respectable letter as they said, "many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signifigance. They said that it meant Abel, so strong was Hester Prynne, with a womans strength." (91). Fitting more into the crowd and gaining more respect from her peers boosts her confidence and courage to keep doing the right thing, which I think is what lead her to be able to talk to Chillingworth because she is just starting to fullfill this power the scarlet letter gave to her and she must use it.

I think Roger chillingworth has a very negative and evil effect on Dimmesdale, both physically and mentally. The more Chillingworth figures out about dimmesdales 'secret' the more ill Dimmesdale grows. This is because Chillingworth, promising to get his revenge, does this in secret by his intellectual ways of medicine. Dimmesdale suffers a long period of time suffering, trying to reveal his sin to the public, but he is too afraid. Chillingworth is taking on the work of the devil by his obsession with revenge, which is even more of a sin than what dimmesdale himself did. Chillingworth admits to Hester about his actions towards Dimmesdale, " ... he knew that no friendly hand was pulling him, which sought only evil, and found it... A moral man, with a once human heart, has become a fiend for his especial torment" (96). Chillingworth revelas how his revenge has casted Dimmesdale to torture himself for his own sins. CHillingworth states how he once had a human heart, which implied that Chillingworth, the evilness of himself, had taken that away from Dimmesdale and has made him misserable.

It shows that the letter has served a purpose in her life even though she believes that what she did is a burden that she must carry with her for the rest of her days. The letter has given her this "power" to see the world for what it really is and has helped her grow mentally and even spiritually. So I think what she's saying in this quote is that the opinion of the elders doesn't really matter to her especially when it comes down to the letter.

Hester explains how, "There lay a responsibility upon her, in reference to the clergyman, which she owed to no other, nor to the whole world besides. The links that united her to the rest of humankind - links of flowers, or silk or gold or whatever the material - had been broken. Here was the iron link of mutual crime, which neither she nor he could break" (145). This goes to show that she is unwilling to sit in cowardice and let Chillingworth continue tormenting Dimmesdale, and now has the courage to stand up for the one person she actually is connected with.

Emotions are the driving force behind actions. Without emotions, there would be no point to doing anything, and the same idea goes for doing nothing at all. Some of the most damaging and I would argue dangerous situations that have the potential to alter someone as a person are when they use their own emotions and motives to try and make another individual miserable and torment them. I have watched the show Criminal Minds for years now, and time and time again they are displaying how some of the most ruthless and dangerous perpetrators of crime are the ones who are so violently engulfed in their own motives that they will stop at nothing to make someone else suffer. This same idea can be seen in Roger Chillingworth as he becomes so invested in the idea of revenge that it consumes his every move. Chillingworth's evil and malice starts rubbing off on Dimmesdale and makes him increasingly sicker and brings torment and torture to the Reverend's life. This not only results in Chillingworth's whole persona being altered (more evil and looking more ugly/deformed/old) but also alters the Reverend's life as he becomes stuck in a constant ring of guilt and stress causing him to become physically and mentally sick. The Reverend starts to exhibit some degree of hysteria the more time he spends with Chillingworth and the more his guilt increases. He describes how he sees, "A herd of diabolic figures that grinned and mocked the pale minister, and beckoned him away with them..." (132).

In the years that have passed since Hester was first punished for her crime, the attitudes of the townspeople towards her have greatly changed. Because Hester accepted and never tried to challenge or change her punishment, the townspeople never had a renewed reason to think badly of her, so as the years went on, they began to regard her more plainly. "As is apt to be the case when a person stands out in any prominence before the community, and, at the same time, interferes neither with public nor individual interests and conveniences, a species of general regard had ultimately grown up in reference to Hester Prynne" (145). The fact that people are now regarding Hester normally and not with outright hatred as they had done in the past reveals a lot not only about the Puritans but about mankind in general. No matter what had happened in the past, if you give time for things to heal, people will be forgiven in one way or another.

Roger Chillingworth has a psychologic power over Hester Prynne. At the beginning of the novel he comes to her while she is in mental turmoil and he forces her to go along with his plan. Through a discussion in Chapter 14, we see that Hester is still manipulated by Chillingworth into feeling a certain way.
“What choice had you?” asked Roger Chillingworth. “My finger, pointed at this man, would have hurled him from his pulpit into a dungeon,—thence, peradventure, to the gallows!”
“It had been better so!” said Hester Prynne.
He uses this to make her feel like she is powerless to help Dimmesdale.

Since coming to the town after Hester's punishment, Chillingworth has practiced as a physician in the community. Reverend Dimmesdale has been declining in health, and Chillingworth has been looking after him and his ailments. Not long after, Chillingworth moved in with Dimmesdale to keep a closer watch on him and his condition. Dimmesdale's condition has continued to worsen under the care of Chillingworth and the reverend seems to be inching closer to death with each passing day. Hester Prynne confronts Chillingworth in chapter 14, accusing him of torturing the reverend, "Since that day, no man is so near to him as you. You tread behind his every footstep. You are beside him, sleeping and waking. You search his thoughts. You burrow and rankle in his heart! Your clutch is on his life, and you cause him to die daily a living death; and still he knows you not" (154). Chillingworth has done nothing but mess with Dimmesdale's already weakened mental state, which has just pushed him further towards death. His declining physical health combined with his never-ending burden of his concealed sin has pushed Dimmesdale almost to lunacy, and Chillingworth is certainly not doing anything to alleviate the situation.
