He was one of the biggest stars of the 20th century. In fact, his fame is what attracted the United States government. Charlie Chaplin initially didn't do anything that would have made people point him in the direction of being a communist, however due to him being a British actor living in America, the government wanted to keep tabs on him. Chaplin was immediately arrested upon his return to the United States after spending time in Britain celebrating a holiday. Chaplin even admitted how he had nothing to do with being a communist and that all he wanted to do was make people laugh, yet this didn't stop the right-wing conservatives from targeting him. She dropped out at the age of 16 to help support her family. She then became a dancer at the Cotton Club in Harlem. She later signed with MGM studios and became known as one of the top African-American performers (Singer) of her time, which can be seen in such films as "Cabin in the Sky" and "Stormy Weather". She was also known for her work with civil rights groups and refused to play roles that stereotyped African-American women. After some time out of the spotlight, she made an award-winning comeback with her 1981 show Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. Continuing to record into her later years, Horne died on May 9, 2010.

McCarthyism was sweeping through Hollywood, and Horne soon found herself blacklisted, believed to be due in part to her friendship with actor Paul Robeson, who was also blacklisted

He was referred to as the "Dean of American composers". Paul Robeson went on to become an athlete and performing artist. He starred in both stage and film versions of "Emperor Jones" and "Show Boat", and established an immensely popular screen and singing career of international proportions. Robeson spoke out against racism and became a world activist. He died in Pennsylvania in 1976.

Robeson was blacklisted because he was labeled a communist and was criticized by government officials as well as some African-American leaders.
