Our objective is to raise awareness about problems of the most vulnerable children. We do
that through interviews with a support teacher and an educator of autistic children. We also
planned to participate in some workshops with autistic children to understand their
difficulties and how they can be helped in their education.
For us it is important to attract interest in order to make teachers, class mates and families
to cooperate for the development of these students with learning difficulties.
Teachers need to have the correct preparation to help the children with disabilities and
must favor inclusion and relationship with their classmates.
Classmates are particularly important for the development of a child with disabilities
because they can create friendships and play, classmates can be important allies and help
these children.
Families too, they have to stimulate and help their children to collaborate and make long
lasting friedships.
By participating in their workshops (music and orchestra, dance, robotics, theater and art)
we can understand what kind of lesson and activities they do and how they feel. Through
the interviews we can understand what kind of problems and skills they have and how the
teachers help them. In addition, by doing so, we have given teachers the opportunity to
express themselves without filters. By doing these activities we can understand that some
children and adults have more difficulty in learning and need more help in order to improve
more and more. We as children, can also understand better how to help them and be
closer to them.
We could investigate the topic of children with learning difficulties only by researching articles
written by experts. This way would have allowed us to have a bigger view of the various
problems of children who have learning difficulties, we would have obtained more
information but we would not have been able to get to know these problems directly and
get our own idea by living the experience ourselves closer to them. The study of the
articles would have allowed us to avoid to go in presence and risk contagion for COVID.
We could write a letter to the Education Department to ask for more concrete help for
these children from those the insitution who makes decisions about the school.
In our opinion it is better to live the experience directly, rather than documenting ourselves
only through articles or writing letters.
In this way we discovered the great abilities that these children have and the difficulties
they have, we understood that with the help of the support teachers and doing after-school
therapies they can improve. The teachers told us that our presence, and in general the
contact with other children who do not have their problems, contributes a lot to their
happiness and encourages them to socialize. In addition, our presence has stimulated and
encouraged them to make new friends. We also understood that they are very sensitive
children and if they find sincerity they are really kind to us.
It is very important that these children have all the necessary resources to heal
themselves, the resources are: school, afternoon workshops and therapies.
Teamwork is fundamental: parents, teachers, educators, therapists and teamates!!!
By keeping the right distances, we ran no risk of contagion.
