How do we recognise cultures that are different from what a white, middle class teacher sees as ‘the norm’, without distinguishing an ‘us’ and a ‘them’? What would you do in a situation where you were unsure on how to discuss race within the classroom?

It is important to acknowledge the age of the students you are addressing, however keep in mind that 'ignoring' the differences within a group of students causes issues. No group of students should be blanketed as 'the same', cultural differences should be acknowledged and encouraged to be respected and explored by everyone in the class. Differences are a good thing! Just keep in mind respectfulness and inclusiveness. :)

If a situation arose where I felt unsure about discussing race in the classroom, I think the worst thing I (as a teacher) could do is pretend to be informed about the topic and give an answer that may be incorrect or inaccurate. What I would do is simply tell the students that I am not informed enough on the topic of race to discuss it in depth, but I would go home and research it and form my own opinions, which I would then talk about with the student.

It is important to provide a space where acceptance and tolerance of difference is promoted. The teacher should provide ONGOING opportunities for children to explore their perception of their culture and understand that of those in their school community. It is a good idea to have adults from a wide variety of cultural groups come in- this can help support education of differences and stop ignorance.
