Medical Information - Broken Back

In the bus crash, DeMaria broke her back, which threatened her with paralysis and life in a wheel chair. So how does a broken back lead to paralysis? Nerves in the spinal cord are vital to motor function because they relay messages to the brain. When these nerves are damaged, they leave the body unable to send/receive signals, causing paralysis.

Medical Information - Rods Through Back

Rods were placed in DeMaria's back, and at one point, these rods actually came undone and tore through DeMaria's skin. What are these rods used for, and why did they come out? After a traumatic back injury, rods are placed in the spine to promote healing and structure. The longer she had them in, the more confident she felt about bending forward, picking things up, and maintaining her daily routine. However, this made the rods loosen and eventually snap. Surgeons had to deflate her lungs and enter from the front in order to repair the rods.

DeMaria was very physically active, and when her rods snapped and punctured through her skin, she had to get very intensive surgery involving the deflation of her lungs. The surgery healing proces was extremely difficult; over the summer, she was required to stay on her back, and was only permitted to sit up 5 minutes per day.
