I was born here in New Jersey, but both my parents were born and raised in Egypt. In Egypt, especially 40 years ago, it was commonplace for families to harvest their own food. This would occur on rooftops of apartment buildings: families would breed and raise chickens, pigeons and more. On my father’s side, one of the baby chicks swallowed a nail. They watched that baby chick carefully to see if the nail would pass naturally. In just a couple days, the situation was increasingly clear: the chick would not eat, and it was losing weight rapidly. The nail was not passing through, in fact you could see the bulge of the nail in the poor chicks neck. This baby chick, to my dad’s family, represented a future meal. It is unlikely there was even a nearby veterinarian to handle the medical emergency, and that would definitely have been a negative return on investment. So, what did they do? My grandma, with no formal education, restrained the baby chick, which was easy because the poor thing was fatigued from starvation. My grandfather, who was on his path to becoming a lawyer, got out a blade used for shaving. He boiled a pot of water and used the hot water as a disinfectant for the blade. My grandpa was very methodical in his approach. He cut the skin on the chicken right where the bulge of the nail was, and then made his way through some fat. Then the throat itself was exposed, and he made an incision there. There was a good amount of residual food that had been backed up, and my grandpa cleared it all out, and proceeded to remove the nail. He then used knitting equipment as suture material. He sutured the throat and the skin closed in two separate sutures. Finally, my grandpa went to a local pharmacy, picked up whatever medicine and mixed it in water to serve as an antibiotic for the chick. The chick started eating again, and even made a full recovery! That story hopefully shares some insight on how meaningful animals can be to certain cultures. Some cultures truly depend on animals, and for different reasons!

For instance, abandoning animals is a strong offense that can land you in prison as well as slaughtering animals anywhere besides a slaughterhouse. As one travels toward the north, stray dogs become less common and one can find monkeys on the side of roads with tall trees and mountains. These monkeys are also protected under the Wildlife Protection Act. Using animals for entertainment such as circuses, animal fighting, and as a sacrifice is all very illegal in India. With the most common religion in India being Hinduism, many animals are honored as they are associated with gods such as monkeys, elephants, tigers, cows, and even rats.

People will have multiple animals but them actually taking care of them is not something that is often seen. There are people who do love their animals and try to take care of them as much as possible. For example, my mom and I and our neighbors used to take care of basically all the animals in our little community. We would treat sick dogs and cats as best we could. We built kennels for our dogs and at one point our neighbor’s cat gave birth under our bed. We would treat infected wounds and cuts after they would get injured so throughout our neighborhood we were known for taking care of the sick animals.

When my mom was young she lived on a farm in the Dominican Republic. On the farm she had cows, goats, donkeys, chickens and pigs. I believe she had a few horses too. She also had a few dogs too. Her family would use the animals for food purposes but kept some as pets. The cows they would use for milk. They would use the chickens to get eggs and meat. After all the animals did a job for them for a while they would end up eating them. That gave my family a love for animals. My mom no longer has the farm but one of her uncles has chickens and turkeys in his backyard and will eat the ones that don't produce eggs anymore. Most of my family down there has dogs and I currently have my own dog who I love so much. I also love horses and I grew up riding horses.

My family in Italy lives in a rural section with small farms. On their farm they would use animals such as chickens as a resource for meat and eggs. They also have cats around the fields which they care about, but they don’t care for them.
