Considering that this Padlet is serving as a personal resource, I’ve decided to do it on deaf and hard of hearing. There are still a few disabilities that I am very unfamiliar with, this being one of them. I have minimal previous knowledge of how to help students in this particular disability group. It is interesting and comforting to learn about the different ways I can better assist students in the field. The following articles all demonstrate great ways to include our deaf and hard of hearing in literacy activities. All of the articles incorporate both experiences and data with great amounts of reliability. The two major suggestions across all resources were using ASL and Braille. One particular policy that really stood out for me was the idea of access to resources. The importance of your classroom environment and having the available resources is the biggest part of the intervention program. Most of the improvements in this particular disability group rely on ASL trained personnel and Braille based materials. ASL interpreters can help students be on academic level and may even earn the eligibility to mainstream. Listening devices are key to a DHH readers success, when used appropriately by both the student and teacher. Accommodations to the readings are also a strategy as it can be difficult to learn through a teacher and an interpreter at the same time. Limiting the amount of context reading can improve the readers self-esteem and confidence which is often an issue with our DHH students. Considering that our DHH students require more time to read and process the learning materials. It is crucial to be patient and accommodate shorter lessons to keep them included and engaged with the grade level standards. Another important strategy is progressive reading which entails a book of choice to enhance their abilities and encourage independent participation.
