Each IPA symbol (the phonetic symbol) is a sound in the English language. For example, the symbol /ʃ/ represents the sound of "sh" in the word SHOWER. In Portuguese, /ʃ/ is the sound for "ch" in the word CHUVEIRO. The IPA is called "International" because it has the sounds of every language in the world. Nice, right?
