King Lear Play by William Shakespeare

This is the original play that was written by Shakespeare and first performed in 1606. The play is about the fear of an old man that he is unloved by his only family. This theme of insecurity spreads to the rest of the tale when he pushes away the daughter who loves him the most. The play teaches its' audience to recognize who really cares for them and who is only performing for a reward.

Ran by Akira Kurosawa

In 1985, Akira Kurosawa directed a film called "Ran." The film is an adaptation of the King Lear story. It tells a similar story to Shakespeare's version. The theme of the large-living king who decides to split his kingdom between his children, but misses the love that one of his sons truly has for him is still intact. The legendary director brings the story to the modern day. Kurosawa is known for adapting classic mythological tales of importance for modern audiences and showing how valuable these archetypes can be in modern media.

A Thousand Acres by Jocelyn Moorhouse

1997 brought another film interpretation of King Lear's story with "A Thousand Acres." This film shows the same types of character but this time they exist on a farm and battle for ownership of it. The film is a much more dramatic telling of the story from "Ran." The film relies more on the thrill of the plot and the way the characters mistreat each other than teaching its' audience through themes. Although not a terrible interpretation, this film is nowhere near the most critically successful version of the story.

This version of King Lear follows a drug lord in Liverpool. He looks to pawn off his drug trade to his daughters when his wife dies. This family finds difficulty adapting to this truth and drama ensues. This film brings the story and its' structure into the 21st century. In the end, it fails to be more interesting or revolutionary than the original.

King of Texas by Uli Edel

This film might just be the closest adaptation of the original story of King Lear written by Shakespeare. Patrick Stewart, a notable actor, portrays the main character, John Lear. The film's plot is portrayed through the lens of the farming aesthetic similar to "A Thousand Acres." It is quite a bit more faithful than that film though. The ending is different from the story however. In the end, the two daughters that pine after the wealth of their father are killed. This indulgence of the audience seems to be a sign of the times. It shows how film and storytelling alike have changed in the years since the original. This film can be looked at when comparing old ways of storytelling and new. This is not to say that new storytelling is frivolous, but it tends to show the audience a more satisfying ending than one closest to reality.
