My advice to the youngins is no doubt make sure you’re having fun. A lot of my problems throughout the last 4 years stemmed from me being too hard on myself and not looking at the big picture that it’s just high school soccer and supposed to be fun! You are not expected to be the whole team. If each person does their part, the team will exceed. And funny thing is I have proven you do play better when you are not thinking about the coaches, parents, stats, or anything else, but just simply having a good time out there. Live in the moment, play your game, and laugh and move on if you screw up. Next, never walk away from the sport. I have hated soccer and wanted to walk off the field, and there have been times you wouldn't be able to get me off the field because I loved it so much. Soccer is very mental. If you’re feeling burnt out, talk to your coaches and teammates and they will help you. every one is going to have shitty games, it’s just reality, but use it as motivation to try to better yourself for the next game. Mental health is equally, if not more important than physical. No one is expecting you to be something you aren’t, and this is a family so everyone cares about you. Walk away if you need to, but never go far. It’s ok to need a break, but don’t let it define you. Sticking with soccer has made me the person and player I am today, and I realize now how lost I would of been without it. Take advantage of all the opportunities you are given, big and small, and don’t overthink them either it’s just a game! I think I speak for all the seniors when I say I would give anything to be able to play my last highschool soccer game, so use this as motivation. play every game like it’s your last and leave everything out on the field. chase down that defender, make that extra run, and go in for that tackle. You are all great soccer players, but even better people. You are so lucky to have each other. Although I loved my teammates since I was little, there’s something different about connecting with your teammates as you mature as a person. Benet soccer players push each other to be better on the field, in the classroom, and with their friends. You will learn lessons by trying to become a better teammate over the remaining years you have left at Benet. I didn’t even realize that I was learning these lessons until it was over. I learned that a good teammate’s best interest is to make their other teammates better. Another thing that I learned is to give and receive criticism with grace. There is nothing wrong with criticism. Criticism should be given to make your teammates better. However, it should be given in an encouraging way. Never discourage yourself or your teammates. If you make a mistake, get past it. Learn from that mistake and realize that by making that mistake, you learn how to avoid it from now on. We all make mistakes on and off the field, the best thing to do is to own up to your mistakes and figure out how to not make that mistake again. Another thing that I learned from Benet soccer is to accept your role on the team. If you don’t play as much as you would like to, do not get angry. You will get your opportunity to prove yourself. Always work hard in practice. The coaches notice everything, even if you don’t think they do. They see how hard you work even when you think they’re not looking. Keep your head up if something happens in your life that may be disappointing. It will be okay. The best thing you can do if something bad happens is figure out how to find the good in it. Even if you feel like there’s no good in it, getting past it will make you stronger. My favorite part of Benet soccer was when I would smile and laugh with my teammates. There have been days that I had a bad day at school, but seeing one of my teammates smile or laugh at practice after school made it so much better that I even forgot what was going on before practice. You may not be in the same friend group as your teammates, but your bond is different than those of your school friends. You may not even realize it, but you pick each other up when you’re down, you encourage each other to be better, and you celebrate together when you have success. I am so grateful for Benet soccer. A state championship was icing on the cake, because I would have been completely content with my experience at Benet soccer with or without a state championship. Benet soccer creates a family of soccer players. I am so lucky to have been a part of that family and I am excited to take everything I learned here into the future.
