Researchers eliminated participants from the final sample if they were over the age of 29 (n = 14), or if they had never dated (n = 19). In addition, participants were excluded from the final sample (n = 26) if they incorrectly answered more than three of seven control questions embedded in the survey

The final sample consisted of 421 emerging adults (73% female), 18–29 years old (M = 20.24, SD = 2.15). Participants identified themselves as Caucasian
(52.2%), African-American (21.6%), multiracial (8.1%), or other racial background (18.1%). Additionally, 9.3% of the participants endorsed being of Hispanic descent.
While each participant in the final sample had previously dated, 54.2% of participants were partnered at the time that they completed the survey.
