The Shakers believed that sin was a result of a society that put limitations on achieving “self-denying” life. They were given the name “shakers” due to the erratic way they would dance, or shake, during worship services. The Shakers practiced pacifism, a communal lifestyle, celibacy, and equality of the sexes. The movement gained a large number of supporters in its early years; there were six-thousand supporters at its peak. But it ultimately declined because of low population due to celibacy.

The community had a system of "complex marriage", where everyone was married to each other. They also believed that the second coming of Jesus Christ had already occurred, and that everyone can achieve freedom from sin.

How did The Second Great Awakening Influence Communalism?

The Second Great Awakening opened opportunities for large camp meetings where people were converted to different religions through an enthusiastic way of preaching. These meetings continued with different religions that were becoming increasingly popular due to the idea that humans were in charge of their own free will. This was widely accepted during the Second Great Awakening. This eventually led to people gathering in communities with those who believed the same teachings they did and trying to build a Utopian type society.
