Tokyo used to be called 'Edo Bay' and most of Japan's ports are located here. About 80 percent of Japan is mountainous with both inactive and active volcanoes. The Japanese Alps, which are located on the island of Honshu, are enormous mountains that range between 8,000 and 10,500 feet tall. Japan's highest mountain is located near Tokyo. This volcanic cone, called Fujiyama, reaches 12,389 feet tall. Volcanoes are an important feature of Japan. There are 192 volcanoes on the islands that make up Japan, only 50 of which are considered active.
Another prominent physical feature is the Kanto Plain. Although only 20 percent of Japan is flat, the Kanto Plain is large. This is where Tokyo is located. The few plains are important, because this is where the majority of the population lives and where farming and manufacturing take place. Although there are few lakes, the largest is Biwa Lake. It lies on Honshu and is 265 square miles. Another important body of water is the Inland Sea, which is located between three of the islands of Japan: Shikoku, Kyushu and Honshu. There are many rivers in Japan, but none can be navigated by boat. However, these rivers are important sources of irrigation and hydroelectric power. The longest river is Shinano, and it travels 230 miles. The population of tokyo is 13.35 million
Some interesting facts about Tokyo and Japan:
you have to take off your shoes at a thershold and there are bathroom slippers to go on the bathroom tile
Any number containing 4 (four) is bad luck
And blowing your nose in public is considered rude
Also they have the worlds fastest train, a Maglev.

Human/Environment Interaction

The Japanese like to interact with their environment by building parks. There are over 6000 parks covering over 1000 hectares of land in Tokyo. They love watching the cycle of the cherry trees and they love to have picnics.
Tokyo is intersected by the Sumida River, which the effects on that is that Tokyo has an extensive network of Canals. There is a large manmade port at the mouth of the Sumida. The development of which has enabled Tokyo to compete with there rival, Yokohama. Mount Fuji is west of Tokyo and it is one of the highest points of Japan.
The city is slow to stop the environmental issues because they have a lot on their mind. Tokyo is using a lot of there land space on buildings because of their strong economic centers. There is hardly any farming in Tokyo, except for the occasional farming of a balcony or in the public gardens. Out past the suburbs of Metropolitan Japan, there are rural plains and mountains where people can farm, but that is past the suburbs, so it is not actually Tokyo.
There is not a lot of interacting, just building. Building is negative for the environment, so the Japanese interact with their environment in a negative way. To balance that act, Japan and Tokyo are part of the Kyoto Protocol which is made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. On top of that, Japan uses a lot of renewable energy, and tries to limit their use of fossil fuels, because fossil fuel produce greenhouse gases when burned. Greenhouse gasses hurt the environment. Tokyo has a good point to pollution though, there is a lot of mass transit because there is a lot of traffic on the small roads. Mass transit is better for the environment.

There are two main modes of transportation:
By air - Tokyo has two airports: Narita Airport handles the majority of international flights and only a small number of domestic flights. It is located 60 kilometers outside of central Tokyo. The more centrally located Haneda Airport handles a smaller number of international flights and the majority of domestic flights.
By shinkansen (a railroad system carrying high-speed passenger trains) - Most shinkansen lines lead to Tokyo. The trip from Osaka/Kyoto takes about three hours. There are also direct trains to/from Kyushu, Kanazawa, Niigata and various destinations in the Tohoku Region.
Tokyo is covered by a dense network of train, subway and bus lines, which are operated by about a dozen different companies. The train lines operated by JR East and the subway lines are most convenient for moving around central Tokyo.

Japan has 47 prefectures or regions that is ruled by a governer. On the basis of geographical and historical background, these prefectures can be divided into eight regions: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu-Okinawa.
Each region has its own dialect, customs, and unique traditional culture. For example, the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, and the Kansai region, which includes Osaka, offer striking contrasts in everything from the taste of food to the style of traditional performing arts, and people have fun comparing them.
