         <description><![CDATA[<div>In Awakening and Fences <strong>self-discovery</strong> and <strong>freedom of choice</strong>. Self choice is being displayed in both books and in Awakening Edna wanted to get away and be more than a mother and a wife to her husband. In fences Corey wanted to find himself through sports instead of having his father dictate his life. In Awakening Edna learns to think of herself as an autonomous human being and rebels against social norms by leaving her husband and having affair. In Fences Corey stopped listening to his father and made his own choices.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Fences(1950) Awakening(1899)         Fences literary period- a group of Americans spoke out against inequality and injustice during the 1950's. African Americans had been fighting against racial discrimination for centuries; during  the 1950's, however, the struggle against racism and segregation entered the mainstream of American life.<br><br>Awakening literary period- As the 19th century was coming to a close, a new image of the American women began to emerge. women increasingly ventured into public activities once thought only appropriate for men. Although women still filled conventional roles as wives and mothers, the 1890's saw their increased presence in the workplace and their efforts to be recognized as equals in the political arena. Women showed themselves to be physically capable of athletic accomplishments that extended beyond riding a bicycle.</div>]]></description>
