"Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." These stories are not shared for gore and glory. They are shared so we learn from them and do not repeat the same mistakes. Read before you go. Understand what can happen without proper planning.

Consider taking a boating safety course. Here's one: (No endorsement implied; this is FYI)
http://njboatingsafetyclasses.com

What are the details of your trip?
Length? Time? Who has your itinerary? It's important that someone who is not going on this trip knows the details of your trip and has a check in time. Do not underestimate this time but also do not give yourself too much time. This is when consulting with local experts will come in very handy.

What are the conditions of the water? Rapids, slow river, lake, large open body of water? Each of these can be impacted by a variety of conditions. Know before you go!

What is the local area like and what can we expect from this particular route? Not only will this help you be safe, it's also interesting to know about the history of a place.

What is my level of skill/ comfort?
What have I kayaked before? What training/ instruction could I benefit from? How can I be the safest kayaker possible?

What do the local experts say?
It's best to start off kayaking and canoeing by consulting with a local guide service. Even if it's just a company that drops you off and picks you up, they will have information that is valuable.

Medical needs/ concerns
Does anyone on the trip have any medical problems that might require medication? What will happen if their problem develops or worsens on this trip? Can you handle that? What do we do if cell service doesn't work?

Resect nature
Practice Leave no trace. Do not trample on fragile growth; clean up after yourself. Do not build fires outside of designated areas. Think about what impact you will have. No one should know you've been there prior.
https://lnt.org

The night before
Gather and organize the items you will be bringing. Think about the people going. What is missing? What could you add or remove? Seeing it all before you is helpful to not forgetting anything.

Think about your comfort for the trip. Consider time and distance. How hot is it? Will you want to wade in the water during this trip at all? Is there rain in the forecast?
