This age group was chosen due to the fact that we believe our thriller opening would be most appealing to people of that age range, therefore we researched students of the ages ranging from 16-25 in order to gain a brief insight into what our target audience want to see. Although this age group targets a niche audience, we believe this is the most effective group of age as we believe they’ll be more appreciative of this thriller. The most significant question we asked during our research was “What makes a thriller thrilling?”, in which we were able to draw a specific idea of what our target audience expect to see in an effective thriller. Many responses include the use of fast paced editing and soundtrack, a suspenseful narrative, violence and plot twists. These responses were helpful in the production of our thriller opening because they were coming from our target audience, and displays what they wish to see in an effective thriller opening. Therefore, we decided as a group to include each of these conventions, in order to reach a mass audience of those we wish to target. This is because these contain skilled/semi/unskilled manual workers and part time workers. Students and those who work part time rather than those in managerial work are more likely to have more, and be more appreciative, of their leisure time, and want to go out to the cinema. Although, we decided to aim it at all classes because those at the higher end of the scale are be able to afford adequate leisure time, e.g. going to the cinema regularly. These factors contribute to the ideology of our target audience’s psychographics. Our target audience take great interest in film and television, particularly of the thriller genre e.g. Dexter and Psycho. Our target audience would like music of the indie rock genre and enjoy socialising. We decided not to target a specific gender in order to reach a mass audience. The stereotypical psychographic of our target audience is explorers and mainstreamers. Explorers search for experiences and challenges, and typically consists of young people, which is what our thriller opening targets. They seek discovery, and they are able to do this by watching thriller films. Mainstreamers follow the latest trends, which is a stereotype of young people, and our opening sequence targets young people. Our target audience are most likely to show great interest in film and television. They are likely to watch TV shows such as Dexter and American Horror Story, which are deemed disturbing yet produced to target a younger audience. For the most part, our opening sequence isn’t extremely disturbing, however when Natasha’s character appears at the end covered in blood, it could be considered to be troubling/distressing. Our target audience are likely to favour crime, mystery and horror thrillers over any others e.g. Action, Disaster, etc. This is because crime and mystery are our sub-genres, while it could be argued some horror aspects are in there too. Our target audience would ideally be interest in music of the indie rock genre, with a strong beat. This is because this is the kind of soundtrack that accompanies our opening sequence. We decided to use an upbeat soundtrack in order to keep our audience entertained. It could be argued that a more eerie, ambient soundtrack could come across boring. Examples of music that our target audience may like is music from Red Hot Chilli Peppers or The 1975 because they produce music of the same sort of sound. These bands show emphasis on the use of instruments, just like the music we used in our opening sequence. Finally, the kind of shops our audience are most likely to shop in are affordable, popular shops like H&M and New Look.
