If I had to choose one of the Privates from the Corps of Discovery to go with me on my journey, I would choose Francois LaBiche. Francois LaBiche was encountered by Lewis and Clark when they reached Kaskaskia, Illinois Territory on November 28, 1803. On May 26, 1804, LaBiche was assigned as a boatman by the captains. He was also the interpret during a council with the Oto Indians on August 6, 1804. LaBiche returned to St. Louis and was placed in charge of a pack train. He helped Lewis and Clark greatly on his adventure with them.

Francois LaBiche would be the best choice because he was an experienced boatman, frontier trader, and multilingual. Him being an experienced boatman means he can fix the boat if something goes wrong. Also, since he was a frontier trader, he could make sneaky trades that benefit us. Lastly, his knowledge of English and French languages can help our relations with the Natives. By talking to them, we can prove that we mean no harm and are just passing through. I am sure that LaBiche can help us on our journey because he helped Lewis and Clark a lot.

Plant: Blue Flax
On their journey, Lewis and Clark discovered the Blue Flax. This plant has long stems with small, blue flowers on the ends. When the Corps of Discovery discovered this, they might have been worried about the odd stem. The stem has pedals hanging off of it, and they may have thought it was poisonous. I believe that the members of the Corps would have thought the flower was fancy and interesting. This flower is also called the Prairie Flax, Lewis Flax, and Lewis’s Flax.

Animal: Grizzly Bear
On their journey, Lewis and Clark discovered the Grizzly Bear. The Grizzly Bear was probably an interesting discovery. This is because, as an adult male, this animal is about 3’ 4” tall, 6’ 6” long, and 600 pounds. I can image the members of the corps of discovery being extremely scared when they came across this animal. Lewis and Clark discovered this animal, and over time scientists have figured out that they live 20 - 25 years in the wild.

One Native American tribe that Lewis and Clark encountered on their journey was the Oto Indians. The Oto Indians were part of the Southern Sioux tribe who lived on the Missouri River near the present-day border of Missouri and Nebraska. These people were mostly buffalo-hunters and farmers. In July 1804, Lewis and Clark reached their towns while many of the Indians were out buffalo-hunting. The corps sent men looking for the Indians but they didn’t find any of them. They continued their journey without finding these people. Eventually, on August 2nd, a small group of Otos arrived at Council Bluff, the campsite of the Corps. The Otos helped Lewis and Clark because they made positive relations with the other Native American tribes for the Corps.

On their journey, Lewis and Clark stopped at Fort Clatsop. Fort Clatsop is located in northwest Oregon, near the Pacific Ocean. The absolute location of this fort is 46.129683, -123.890494. This fort is made of logs and was a home for many people. Lewis and Clark stopped at this fort and stayed here for about eleven days. This fort is a National Historic building and is taken care of by the National Historic Service. Lewis and Clark used this as a place to live for a short period of time, but still had to get their own food and take care of themselves. This fort is now part of historical interaction, because people only visit it occasionally. Many explorers traveled along the Oregon Trail, which this building was part of. So, people would see this fort as they follow Lewis and Clark’s expedition. Fort Clatsop is part of the northwest region.

On their journey, Lewis and Clark stopped at Spirit Mound. Spirit Mound is located on the Great Plains in South Dakota. The absolute location of this place is 42.873727, -96.957174. Spirit Mound was also described as “mountain of evil spirits” and “place of deavels.” Now a historical prairie, this area is visited by people wanting to explore. When Lewis and Clark were on their adventure, they stopped at this prairie just to explore the land. This place is now used for historical interaction. Although they didn’t stay here for long, it was still an important part of their adventure.
