1. In the letter, Columbus writes about his exploration and journey to what he thinks is India. He brags about how much gold, spices, and wealth he has discovered. Columbus describes what he sees in such strong diction because he wants Ferdinand and Isabella to realize they made the right decision on funding his journey. He wants the King and Queen to fund his second and third journey as well.

2. He describes the island of Espanola with strong diction to impress and flaunt how wonderful and lush the new land is.

3. He also talks about how kind and welcoming the Tainos were, but in reality they were mistreated and terrified. Columbus also claims the Tainos welcomed the sailors with open arms and several gifts.

4. I think that we should still have columbus day because it is a huge part of our history. Also, even if the Tainos were oppressed we still have sculpture of other people that were oppressed. For example, There are still statues of Robert E Lee on monument ave. even though he was the general of the confederate army. It is not a good thing, but it is still our countries history.

1.) The letter that Columbus wrote to Isabella and Ferdinand described about what he thought about India and the people. He forced the "Indians" to talk about their culture and respecting their country. He also wrote how successful they're going to be with the different golds, metals, and spices. He wants to let them now that what he is doing is good and that they don't need to worry about anything. Also, in the letter he talked about how the adults and children were nice and giving him food after they got over the fear of him conquering over their land.
2.) Columbus talks about how Espanola is beautiful and a utopia place to live. He described the scenery and convenience of the island. He also talks about the different golds, metals, and spices that I mentioned in my first answer. I think he describes it like that because he wants to show Ferdinand and Isabella that he's enjoying his voyage.
3.) He described the population as first scared of him like I also said in my first answer, but when they got more comfortable with him around they were very generous and kind to him with entertaining him and feeding him.
4.)GOODBYE COLUMBUS-
From reading the Goodbye Columbus letter from the Tainos, all they talk about is how Columbus negatively impacted everything. In my opinion I don't think we should celebrate Columbus Day. He enslaved and murdered many indians. Since then, Indians still have to deal with what he had done with making them feel powerless. He was very disrespectful to everyone on the island and only cause hatred. He didn't do anything to help anyone or make the world better in any shape or way. In fact he did the total opposite, which makes me believe that we shouldn't have a day celebrated for him.

1) In the letter Columbus wrote to Ferdinand and Isabella he claims to have found many islands he believes are India. He discuses the landscape and loads of gold, spices, and metals that he "humbly" found. Columbus writes about the Tainos he met and took under his control. He then explains to Ferdinand and Isabella that he has an abundance of gold for them.

2) Columbus describes Espanola like the land is worth so much. He says that the island has much to offer. He Christopher Columbus declares that the people living on Espanola were kind and friendly and treating him like a God.

3)He describes the population as a welcoming community. Columbus said that he could communicate with the indigenous people through hand gestures and similar words. It sounds like Columbus is also taking many of their resources, but we never hear the thoughts of the Tainos when he came into power.

Columbus Day:
After reading the letter from the Tainos I believe that Columbus is guilty and we should reconsider the way we celebrate this holiday. The Tainos claim that once Columbus set foot on "India" he enslaved them all and treated them horribly. This holiday should remember the finding of America, but should not celebrate the deeds Columbus achieved. We should also talk about the Tainos more because they lived on the land before we came.

1. In Columbus' letter to Ferdinand and Isabella, he describes his discovery of islands and people. He recounts the land as being perfect with many resources, and the people, which he calls Indians, as wanting to follow his leadership. His description of his explorations are very convincing to be profitable for Ferdinand and Isabella.
2. Columbus describes Espanola as nothing they've ever seen before and the perfect place to live. He believes that if he makes Espanola sound beautiful and rich with resources, then Ferdinand and Isabella will want to fund him again.
3. Columbus describes the indigenous population as welcoming and naive. He states that they welcomed them to the island with gifts and kindness. While making them sound friendly, he makes them appears almost clueless, when he says they believe that he descended from heaven.
I believe that we should still celebrate Columbus day because although he killed many Tainos and showed extreme racism, which is inexcusable, he discovered the Americas. Without his discoveries, we wouldn't be who and where we are today. I believe that while we celebrate Columbus day, we can also celebrate and remember the indigenous people.

1. The letter Columbus wrote to Ferdinand and Isabella describes in his words the discoveries he's made in "India". He mentions many wonderful things that he believes are important about the land, like the mountains of Espanola that contain gold and other precious metals; something that Ferdinand and Isabella would be very intrigued about. It seems like he is really trying to show off this island with his descriptions to encourage Ferdinand and Isabella that he is doing the right things by conquering the land, enslaving the Indians, and finding new things. He may even be trying to make it sound too good to be true.
2. As said before, the descriptions in the second paragraph are there to describe how amazing Espanola really is. It's as if he's describing a gold mine; all the things there sound so precious. The place is it's own paradise, or at least that's how Columbus wants to make it sound.
3. A quote to start off this answer about how Columbus described the indigenous peoples: "they continue to entertain the idea that I have descended from heaven". Columbus tries to make it seem like the Indians treat him as some sort of God or great warrior. But there is always another side to the story. The indigenous population might have felt the complete opposite way and were forced to praise Columbus. But this letter only describes his opinion. He does mention that they brought them food and drink and saying how they crowded the streets just to see them which I think is very interesting.

1. In Columbus’ letter to Ferdinand and Isabella he describes what he has found. He talks about the islands he has conquered, and what their names are. He also tells them what the land he has found looks like, and what the people did when he arrived. He is basically describing all of his accomplishments to the king and queen in a way that makes him seem great.
2. He describes Espanola by telling all the great things it has to offer. He uses adjectives that are very vivid to make the island seem better than it is. Also by making it sound like such a great discovery, he is making himself look better.
3. He describes them as wanting to be conquered, kind of. He talks about the Tianos in a way that makes them seem like they would like him to rule them, which probably isn't true.
Columbus Day:
I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day. Even though Columbus was the first to discover the Americas from Europe, that does not mean things that he did were right. He took over countries and hurt many people that were doing perfectly fine on their own. So when we are celebrating the holiday, in a way, we are celebrating what he did, and what he did was horrible, so we shouldn't even have a holidy.

1. In the letter that Columbus wrote, he mainly talked about his voyage and the lands he discovered and named. He also mentioned the things he found like the mountains of very fruitful fields, the excellence of the harbors on the island, and the abundance of rivers. He then took the native people (Indians) by force so they could communicate with them and learn their language. At the end of his note, it appears Columbus is telling Ferdinand and Isabella that if he had ships to use whenever, his journey would've been even more astounding.
2. I think he describes "Espanola" in the way he does because he wants to convey the massive size and beauty of the island and all that it offers. He wants them to think he has discovered the perfect piece of land.
3. He describes the indigenous population as if they were worshipping him like a God.
4. I think we should not celebrate Columbus Day because the letter even mentioned that they suggested to replace it with another holiday that is more inclusive. I agree.

He portrays the land as being fertile, beautiful, and convenient to the Spanish rulers. Columbus claims that the native people, whom he calls Indians, were very welcoming. He also promises to bring gold and other resources back to Spain.
2. Columbus describes the island of Espanola as a perfect island. He says its land is great for farming and for cattle, its ports are convenient, and that it could definitely be inhabited. He portrays the island in this way, exaggerating its positive qualities, in order to impress the monarchs who are funding him.
3. Columbus describes the native people as being welcoming and bearing gifts when they arrived. Columbus decided to try teach them the language and wanted to learn about their surroundings from them. He claims that the people believed he was a god.
Columbus Day:
I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day because what actually happened when he arrived in the Americas is nothing to be celebrated.

1. In the letters that Columbus wrote, he talks about the beautiful islands he has explored and the people he has encountered. Throughout his writing, he displays his successes, such as all the islands he has claimed and named and how excellent they are, and the people he is now able to communicate with. He also talks about how each place is different, and from each place how he can acquire different materials and resources for Spain.
2. I think that Columbus describes Espanola the way he does because he thinks that it is the most beautiful island, and maybe he wants to make sure that Isabella and Ferdinand know that the prettiest and most fruitful island is named after Spain.
3. He describes the indigenous population as people who need someone to look up to, and he says its himself. He also says that when they first saw them arrive they gathered and brought him many goods, and they were welcoming to them, and eventually Columbus took some indigenous people and decided to teach them his own language so they could communicate.
4. I think that we should still celebrate Columbus day, because even with his slaughter, he colonized the land and got us to the place we are today. I think that if we continue to celebrate Columbus day, we need to do it in the most respectful manner as possible- no racism and correct name calling for the indigenous people. We also need to focus more on respecting their rights, but I feel like it is still possible to respect the American Indian's rights with the holiday still being a thing.

He talks about when he got to the islands, what they had done, and about to natives who lived there.
2.There is a type of tree called Espanola which is very fruitful and beautiful, the island that Columbus lands on is much like this tree. Hence him comparing them to each other.
3.When Columbus talks about the Tianos, who are native to the island, he describes them as very compliant. In a way that makes them sound expendable, worthless.

I do not agree that Columbus day should be celebrated. Columbus was a cruel idiot from the start, he thought he had landed in the indies which makes no sense considering the length of the journey and the direction they sailed in. Secondly it was not right him at all to enslave, and cruelly treat the natives the way he did. As stated in the Tainos's letter it was against European law to slaughter or create unjust war against natives. What Columbus did was not justified in any way and we should not commemorate his memory with columbus day.

He also describes them as kind of awkward, and he said they were . He describes the Indians as his own, like he had taken them by force and made them "his own people." He did'nt treat them with any respect at all, he basically slaughtered them.
4.

1. Columbus wrote that he has made the "indians" help him learn more about the islands. He also gave names to the different islands they discovered. He writes about how much they have succeeded during the exploration. He also promises that he will provide them as much gold, spices, cotton and etc. as they want.
2. He describes the island in a very majestical form. He probably describes it this way because there might not be as much open valleys, mountains, scenery as it is on the island. He also is finding many things that procure to him such as gold and spices etc for the king and queen.
3. he describes the population as though he were talking about captives or slaves. He believes that the "native americans" are looking for him to lead them and someone to worship. He says that they provide him many resources about the islands.

Celebrating columbus day:

Im with the population that believes that Columbus day should not be celebrated. They say that he "discovered america" is a false fact. The real people that discovered America were the Tiano people. If we were to celebrate the people/ person that discovered America it should be called Tiano Day. If there are other reasons why the day is celebrated including him being a big part in the colonization then there should be other days for other people.
