Juvenile Justice Activity 1 (Period 2) by Jaymee Orafferty

If you committed a serious crime (like murder, rape, etc.), do you think it would be fair for you to be punished the same way an adult who committed the same crime would be? Why or why not? Would your reasoning apply to all crimes or just certain ones? Does age make a difference (would a 12-year-old get the same sentence as a 17-year-old)? Even if you believe teens/children should get the same treatment by crime, would the punishment the same or should it be different? How?

I honestly feel like it should go by a case by case basis. For example if a minor was do commit murder in the first degree they should get x amount of years, if second degree should be like 40 years with possibility of parole. Same options for adults.

I think that it would be fair for all people of all ages who commit murder to have the same sentencing as adults. I think it is a little different for certain ages if someone was rapped because I would think that most people under the age of 15 would not really know what 🤬 is and what it could mean. For anyone older than 15 for a 🤬 charge should be the same as adults because by that age they should know the consequences that come along with their charges such as 🤬. Charges for minors should be depending on the type of crime they commit, if it is something serious like murder they should be punished along with the parent for having a weapon that was in range for the child to use. Something like 🤬 is a little different and should depend on the age of the child and the seriousness of the case.

Yes, I think the punishment for a teen if they have committed a crime should be as equal as an adults punishment. We have learned at a young age of whats right and wrong and have seen the crimes people have committed and what punishments they received. If we are so aware of the punishments criminals receive then it should be common sense to know what is right and wrong.

So, if a teenager is willing to go through and commit a crime then they are fully obliged to go through an adult-like punishment.

It would be fair for everyone to get punished the same way. Even if it were to be a 12 year old, 17 year old or 33 year old, they still would have committed the same crime and should be punished the same way. You know what you're doing when you're committing a crime so there's no excuse or just reasoning for it. Not every crime should have the same punishment, like stealing a candy bar from the store shouldn't get the same life sentencing you'd get for murdering someone. Getting thrown in jail for like a month for stealing is reasonable and getting a life sentence for murdering is also reasonable, but no one should get thrown into prison for their entire life for something as small as theft or a minor crime.

I do believe it would be just for me to receive the same punishment as an adult if I had committed a crime because teenagers are responsible for our actions. Due to social media, this generation is highly aware of the atrocities and is exposed to the actual world. I agree that children should be punished starting at age 13, but perhaps in a different way. Rather than assuming that they are aware of what they have done, perhaps test them to see if they are aware of it. After all, sometimes teenagers aren't really aware of the real world or aren't exposed to it, so they don't know much so maybe their intentions weren't bad. The outcome of their prison sentence should depend on the test.

Age does make a difference because if a child is under the age of 13, they don't really understand what they did was wrong.

I believe it would be fair for all people who commit murder or 🤬. No one deserves that and if your a teen doing it you know exactly what your doing and how much trouble you would get into. Its fair for everyone to get the same punishment no matter what their age is. As we all were young we learned whats right and whats wrong not everyone is perfect but no one needs to do a serious crime to hurt someone because if it was you, you wouldn't want it to happen to you no one does. I think the amount of years a raper should get should be a good amount of years not 1 or 2 they deserve more then that. I don't really think a 12 years old should get the same punishment as a 17 year old because they are still really young they need to be taught a good lesson thought so that they never do it again.

I think that the punishment should be fair but different for circumstances. Some children should already know the difference between what is right and what is wrong. I do think that minors under 12 should be handled differently. Depending on what the crime was that is. For example, if a 17 year old commits murder they should get the same sentence an adult would get.

I believe it would be fair to punish a teen who committed a serious crime in the same manner as an adult. It teaches teens responsibility and aids in bringing justice to the families. Teenagers ought to know better by this point what is right and wrong, hence it ought to apply to all crimes. I think parents and kids should both receive the same punishment. The most likely culprits for their child's actions and accidental encounter with a firearm would be their parents. Age and the seriousness of the crime should both influence the sentence.
