Functional - basic skills e.g reading, writing. Differing literacy levels can be a barrier. 61%of people in UK find health literacy too complex - ethnicity, age and poverty levels are factors. low literacy levels see increased use of a&e services, and decreased levels of screening programs

Interactive- this is patient sharing the skills and confidence to question professionals or ask about options - this promotes shared decision making

Critical - gives patients oppurtunity to take control of wider determinents of health, transferring the balance of power accordingly. allows them to take action when they see barrier.

This section simply explains how good practice by Doctors could help improve Health Literacy amongst patients.
- Good Communication; speaking clearly in simple easy terms and avoiding Jargon.
- Its important to have a good basic understanding of the patient.
- Doctors should ensure that patients understand their consultation and can do so by using the 'teach back' technique.
- Emphasis should be laid on the doctor's ability to communicate with the patient. This helps to identify what explanations are most understood by the patients and vice versa.
- Conveying information using different methods other than verbally eg using multimedia and graphics.
- Patients should be given opportunities to ask questions not only at a consultation but also at a later date.
- Good Practice should be generalized even amongst people who are educated because they may also have low health literacy.
