Summary:  This children’s book encourages children to embrace their unique traits.  The lead character/storyteller mentions several things about herself that may be construed as negative; her messy hair, her smelly breath, her silly clothes.  In the end she finds something positive to love about each of these attributes as she works towards self-acceptance.

Summary:  This powerpoint presentation created by OSSE (the agency which oversees child care licensing in DC) focuses on how and why we should celebrate diversity in an ECE environment.  It is a well down powerpoint with videos and graphs which illustrate the benefits of a diverse family population and how we can continue to create more inclusive classrooms.

Summary:  This journal article published by NAEYC illustrates the negative and hurtful effects of having a gendar-biased approach as a teacher.  The article focuses on a preschool child who is male, putting on a pink coat in dramatic play.  When the child is hurt by the people around him insisting he wear “boy” clothes, the point is made that teachers should embrace an environment where children are allowed to freely express themselves.

Summary:  The North Seattle Family Resource Center is a referral organization in North King county that specializes in families with young children.  They do advocacy work with the government but also act as a support system for family issues like early intervention, family counseling, appropriate family activities, parenting classes and more.
