An Italian Feast

On Christmas Eve we have our big celebration with all of our extended family. We cook homemade pasta and meatballs for all of the non-seafood eating people (mostly the kids). We have homemade clam chowder, fried shrimp, and clams. The tradition dates back to Italian families would have a feast of 13 fishes to represent the 13 disciples (yes, 13). Over the years, the preferences of the family members and availability of some items have seen us whittle the courses down to our most cherished and beloved dishes. The clam chowder is a family recipe. And there is always a large selection of cookies that have been baked for us to share with any visitors or additional family that we visit for the holidays. We also open presents from each other while we are together. So Christmas Eve is the bigger event in our home, even though Santa comes the next day.

The title says it all .... it's a whirlwind of activity from the get go ... way too many people crowded together in one room, several dogs running around, our nephews and middle son playing lazar tag or nerf guns, way too much food to eat, loud conversations (okay shouting over one another to be heard), laughter, and the anticipation to see who gets the first box of 'socks and underwear' as a gift (a holiday tradition I highly recommend), and it wouldn't be complete without lots of homemade cookies, cocktails, and the traditional "Blue Christmas" by Elvis....
If anyone wants to join us, everyone is welcome! The Dilworth's Casa in Plano, TX.
Happy Holidays Y'all!

Coming from a divorced family and then marrying into a divorced family, Christmas is non-stop chaos. Christmas starts for us on the 23rd. We go to my father in laws for taco night and open gifts with that side of the family. The 24th is spent with my Mom where we have finger foods and open gifts with that side of the family. The 25th we open gifts just our little family at home that morning and then drive to East Texas to go to my Dads house, then my Nana's house, then my Pa's house, and then last but not least, the nursing home to visit my great grandparents. By the time all that is over, we are BEYOND EXHAUSTED! Before my mother in law passed away we celebrated with her on the 22nd. Each parent/side of the family gets a special day with us. Christmas is the busiest holiday and I love the days after to rest and relax at home!

When my sister, brother, and I were little, a tradition my mother started is making homemade Christmas cookies of all shapes and sizes with us. She would roll them out, and we would "help" her. Of course, lots of giggles and flour everywhere! And then the fun part of decorating with icing and sprinkles - YUM! I was so excited to continue this tradition with my own children! I am the one baking the cookies now, and then all of the cousins are included as we ice them over at Nana's and Grandpa's (my parents') house . My girls look forward to this tradition each and every year! Merry Christmas, everyone!
