In 1977, there was a drought as the average number of rainfall was 20 mm. In 1978, the drought ended and the rainfall spiked up greatly to 540 mm.

Plants need two things in order to grow and make their own food, water and sunlight. They are used to do Photosynthesis. If the plants on Daphne Major in 1977 couldn't get barely any water, then they die. The finches need these plants for food, so when the plants die and there isn't enough food, then the finches die.

Most of the plants on the Daphne Major island are Portulaca And Tribulus plants that have seeds that the finches feed on. In 1976, there was an average of 11 Portulaca and Tribulus seeds. In 1977, there was an average of 4 Portulaca seeds and 8 Tribulus seeds, and this was taking place in the drought. Finally, in 1978 there was an average of 5 Tribulus and no Portulaca seeds.

Food gives us energy and supports all of our body systems. The finches needs the seeds to survive. Since there were no Portulaca seeds and 5 tribulus seeds in 1978 on Daphne Major. And according to Mrs. Kurz, our teacher, Tribulus seeds are much harder to open. Since the finches with small beaks couldn't eat the seeds, they died, unlike the finches with bigger beaks as they were able to open the seeds and eat them.

The finches couldn't get any food from the Portulaca and Tribulus seeds, so they died. A big part of this could be to the rainfall. It was good over a course of years, until 1977, when the drought occured on Daphne Major and the seed population dramatically decreased.
