Today when Juan arrived at work, he noticed the department was severely
short staff again. He knows with the department being so short staff, he wouldn’t get to do the
blood collections for inpatients by 9 am, as required. This means that he will have angry patients
and he is pushing work onto the evening shift – who are already maxed. Juan takes a look at the
lab orders, and notices he has more than the normal number of urgent lab orders. When it comes
to urgent lab orders they must be completed within four hours. In addition, he still has to
complete the routine lab orders which have a deadline of 24 hours, and is getting close to the 24-
hour deadline. It is critical no errors are made as it can severely impact patient safety. Rushing can
