• MA.4.NF.A.1: Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n x a)/(n x b).

• MA.4.NF.A.2: Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators.

Game Objectives:

• Reinforce understanding of equivalent fractions.

• Practice comparing fractions using benchmarks and models.

• Share the game via a global platform (e.g., Flip or Padlet to assist with collaboration across schools)

• Invite multilingual families to contribute versions in other languages.

• Identify equivalent fractions on cards or compare two fractions and determine which is greater.

• Cards could include:

  "I have 1/2, who has an equivalent fraction?" or " I have 3/4, who has a fraction less than me?"

How to Play:

• Each player receives one or more cards.

• The player with the card that reads "I have 1/2..." begins by reading their card aloud, and the person who holds the matching fraction responds, by going 2nd and reading their card.

• Game play continues, by each player reading their card(s) and other players responding when they hear a fraction called out that matches the fractions on their card(s), until all cards have been played.

• Optional: Use manipulative, like fraction strips or paper or real pizzas to support comparisons.

• Challenge Cards: Challenge cards are used to encourage players to apply their card (the fraction shown on the challenge card) to real-life, local or global contexts. For example, "I have 1/2 a pizza, who has a fraction used in cooking?" or "I have 1/4 past the hour, making the time 6:15pm, who has another fraction that also tells time, and what time is it where you are?"

Students are encouraged to record their game play strengths, strategies, and areas needing growth in printable student reflection journals, or in any journals of their choosing.

Provided with this game are two different layouts of a reflection journal with reflection prompts, to guide students' thinking.

Themed "I Have, Who has" playing cards may be created to meet any players likes and needs.

If a player is a big football fan, or KC Chiefs lover, they can make KC Chiefs Themed Fraction playing cards such as, "If Patrick Mahomes ran the ball 2/3 of the way to the goal line, who has a fraction equal to what is needed for the Chiefs to get a touchdown?"
