Most of my lesson are lecture in class and hands on demonstration in the shop.
I make sure they entire class is quite and listens. I then repeat the students question and then I redo said task.
I give them instructions and allow them to do work during their lunch.
I don't allow subs to teach my class. 1.Students are instructed in the importance of being on time and present - missed time is missed opportunity.
2.Encourage them to move forward and try whether they are wholly comfortable with the hands-on portion and material. Experience and a willingness to get your hands dirty and get in there are good teachers, often the best.
3.If absent they know they are to get what they can from classmates. 
4.Encourage them to seek out videos online to supplement instruction - find it for themselves and take responsibility for their own learning. 
5.I will also write down links they may explore to supplement their knowledge and watch as many times as necessary.
6.Find different ways of communicating the same material

The classes I teach are cumulative leading to the next one. 
When students are absent, students are to e responsible and come ask for the assignment.  hey may also work with other students.
With hands on work they make an appointment with me and another student to learn and practice.  

When they ask about something we just went over, I review with the class and get the information in the students words.
