Roar went the Lion by Joshua George

This book called "Roar Went the Lion", written by Joshua George and illustrated by Sarah Lawrence, was chosen for the assignment. I chose this book as I grew up reading it, and it has been passed along to my younger siblings as they grew up. This story is about a child in his room with his animal friends, and they're all making the wrong animal sounds; for example, the chicken said ribbit. The child then corrects all the animals in the story and allows them to tell the correct animal sounds. The message in this story is that the child can speak up about what's wrong and what's right; the child is also interacting with animals.

Sustainable goal chosen for this assignment.

The sustainable goals I chose for this assignment were 4, 14, and 15. I chose these goals as they relate to the children's story I have chosen for my assignment. Sustainable goal number 4 is quality education. I chose this as the child in the story is educating himself and others about the appropriate animal sounds. I have chosen sustainable goals number 14 and 15 as the animals the child is interacting with are animals on land and in water. Children need to learn about every animal so they can learn about the different species and qualities of each animal.

For the first activity, we used leftover wallpaper, strings, chalk, scissors, glue, and crayons to create a beautiful underwater scene. We cut up the wallpaper to a size we liked and cut some more into the shape of a fish that we traced onto the paper. The children could express their creativity by colouring the fish with our chalk. This relates to the children's book I had chosen as there are animals in the story, and the children noticed that there weren't any sea animals, so the children wanted to be inclusive and add the fish into the story. (NCCA,2009). The children were excited to express themselves through their artistic abilities and asked many questions about the sea life and the animals that live there. The children stuck the fish onto the wallpaper and tied it to strings to make it look like the fish were swimming.

We used the leftover wallpaper from the first activity and created a bird out of the wallpaper for the second activity. We also used some leaves that the children and I collected from outdoors. The children wanted to recreate a bird from the story "Roar Went the Lion", as they loved making the twit sounds. The children were fascinated with the fact that birds can fly. We cut the wallpaper into a cylinder shape and cut a small hole using the scissors into the back of the cylinder to create space for the bird's wings. The children then used the leaf as the bird's tongue as it was the same colour as ours.

For the third activity, the children wanted to do something hands-on and were very involved in using their hands. We made play dough with water, flour, and markers to colour the play dough. The children then folded the play dough into their favourite animal from the story. This activity allowed the children to do whatever colour they wanted or animal they liked. The activity involved a lot of manual work, which the children enjoyed partaking in.

The children wanted to make a puppet from odd socks for the fourth activity. I had many odd socks from the dryer at my house, so I cleaned them and gave the children some odd socks, scissors and markers. The children could make a sock puppet from the animals they read about in the story. The children then used puppets to recreate the story and retell the story to each other. The children learned lots of animal sounds, and their vocabulary and language skills were increased during these activities the children took part in.

For the fifth and final activity, the children wanted to colour on some leftover paper that we had at home. The children then used markers, colours and pencils to create drawings of the animals they saw in the children's book "Roar Went the Lion". The children loved the idea of doing something creative yet simple. They coloured the drawing, and as they were colouring, they made the anima sounds that the animal they drew from the story.
