Upon visiting the website I did noticed that a lot of their music is not from the Western Canon. I personally think that this is a good thing. I feel that by doing that they are able to play a much larger variety of music, and by doing so, draw in people who ordinarily would not listen.

While I feel that it is important that the symphony plays some music outside of the western canon, I also understand that they have to go back to their roots in a sense. By keeping the canon as the center piece of their performances they are able keep the main part of their audience there. One of such performances that I listened to was Gustav Mahler's symphony #3

Dallas seems to have a variety of show's containing music outside of the canon and one of those got me particularly excited: Raiders of the Lost ark. I am a die hard Indiana Jones fan and I think seeing the movie on the big screen while the orchestra preforms the score live would be an amazing experience. I think that this type of innovation is something that will keep people like me who may not be particularly fond of classical music coming back to see more.

“What the event reinforced above all is how beautifully Williams’ score is bound up with Spielberg’s vision.” Flickering Myth

One issue with the music canon is the seemingly class based exclusions. In a world that is becoming increasingly more inclusive, people are calling for a more inclusive canon. This is, in my opinion, the primary reason that many symphonies are attempting to play a more diverse set of music
"The remnant of this class-based exclusionary thinking is visible in today’s society in the disdain..."
Why are women still on the margins? (quote 1)

I believe that it will always be difficult for women to be added in to the canon because the scholars who still attempt to maintain the music canon will be unwilling to change it.
"We came to a conclusion that, in 2017, will likely strike no one as a surprise: that the general history of popular music is told through the great works of men, and that without a serious revision of the canon, women will always remain on the margins." (quote 1)
However, this does not mean that people are not attempting to change this. From what I saw many symphonies are playing pieces either written or performed by women. I believe that once this grows in popularity there is a chance that the western canon could be at least altered to add new music. The issue still remains; however, that many of the pieces of the western canon were created in a time where women were not allowed to express themselves the way that they are encouraged to now. This leads to the concern that modern pieces could seem almost of out place in a canon made up of pieces from the 18th- early 20th century.
