By making a story about the Salem Witch Trials. It was a very important issue at the time with the scare of communist in America. And he felt close to the topic and wanted to bring more awareness to the craziness of it all though a story/history. And he felt a close connection to John Proctor and began making a story around him.

Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as a way to show that the Red scare was as hysterical as the Salem Witch Hunts from so long ago. It was a play that stayed true to his style of alluding to the need for moral responsibility in family and society. Arthur saw that Mcarthy’s simple explanation mirrored Rev. Paris’ simple solution of witch craft. He saw a man in his place of life with their marriage failing but they were still able to fight the majority on the hysteria around them. Arthur wanted to warn the people that they were becoming the same fear and revenge filled people from Salem.

Miller had mentioned several reasons, as to why he decided to write the Crucible. Miller says that he was motivated by the liberals, silenced by the crippling fear of being accused of communism. The playwright also mentions his inspiration drawn from the character John Proctor, who overcame his personal shame and morphed into a person of no filter, and spoke out against the chaos of his town, this was described as a reassurance to Miller.

The red scare served as the "witch trials" and he used the crucible almost as a cry for help, or an example to show what was going on in the world. His play formed from this and the characters he said just seemed to come to life while he wrote it. He just wanted to show how the events related to eachother and so he formed the crucible.

I believe Arthur Miller had two reasons for producing the Crucible. In his early years, he was an occasional guest at Communist meetings. Then in the 1950's the "Red Scare" was prevalent and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Red Society targeted Miller for his history. Miller felt anxious and targeted for being called a communist. Another reason that he also wrote the Crucible is he had a relationship with the character John Proctor. Arthur Miller had a bad marriage with his previous wife, Marilyn Monroe. John Proctor also had a bad relationship with his wife Elizabeth Proctor. Arthur Miller was inspired how even though John Proctor was flawed, he saw the good that existed in him, in a way seeing himself.

But his marriage also played a role, he really felt like he connected with John Proctor. He felt like it was reassurance. The fear of communism was very similar to the fear of the witches back in salem.
