In his early years, he was an occasional guest at Communist meetings. Then in the 1950's the "Red Scare" was prevalent and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Red Society targeted Miller for his history. Miller felt anxious and targeted for being called a communist. Another reason that he also wrote the Crucible is he had a relationship with the character John Proctor. Arthur Miller had a bad marriage with his previous wife, Marilyn Monroe. John Proctor also had a bad relationship with his wife Elizabeth Proctor.
