I learned that he was scared to tell the truth about what had happened to him. He was raped at the age of 8 and was repeatedly raped, it excluded him from his childhood and his manhood and everything. At the age of 11 he suffered from depression and uncontrollable rage , the age of 13 he couldn't stare at himself in the mirror , at the age of 14 he was holding his fathers pistol to his head. Diaz had trouble at school , home, he went through bad and memories. He would get nightmares about getting raped by his father , siblings, teachers , and by strangers and also people he wanted t become friends with. He gave up on school by the time senior year he tried killig himself. Diaz basically didn't care about his life he hated it , he wanted to kill himself because he thought he didn't feel the need to live anymore.

It's crazy how he left all those things happen to himself for such a long period of time and he went for no help, he lost hope and didn't believe in anything and had no manhood, nothing was meant for him.

From this article I learned that the author had gotten raped at an early age continuously and this had put an impact on his teenage life. He had forever remembered this moment for the rest of his life and because of this moment he had trouble sleeping having vivid dreams about his friends raping him, trying to take his life away and having a hard time staying focused in school and making friends. The time he got raped he will forever remember, he’ll remember how hopeless he felt for so many years and the many times he tried to take his life and fall into depression.

I learned from reading this article that Oscar and the author had much in common but also a lot of more differences. Both, had a father who had left. They were both Dominican but Oscar did not look like the typical Dominican the author did, and tries to be a “man” like the typical Dominican and was scared to share his raped story or even talk about it with others. While at first the author had trouble finding a girlfriend just like Oscar the author towards the ends up in many relationships and at one point going from one girl to another without any feelings involved he couldn’t stay in a relationship because he was too much of a player. Just like Oscar the author likes to write, but the author became a success after his first book published book but then like Oscar he came into a dark place that caused him to stop writing.

This author starts to feel lonely and depressed at such a young age, even at 8 years old when he was an innocent little boy he was going through so much and no one would’ve ever thought that he had just been raped. The author had dealt with so much and just kept his feelings hidden away not telling a single soul about his raped story and not getting any help.

He uses Oscar as like the opposite of his life. Yes they both attend college, both had childhood trauma and a lot of family issues they have a lot of differences like how the author goes in and out of relationships. Oscar is the type of person he could’ve became because although they both have a lot of things in common there’s a lot of differences. Like how towards the end how Oscar dies maybe the author used Oscar as how his life could’ve turned out.
(Idk I have to keep reading the book more to answer this question in more detail)

For example, they both believed they weren't a true dominican. Junot was afraid of being found out. In his words, "Real Dominican men aren't raped." Oscar just didn't see it because he was overweight and a nerd.

Junot Diaz had been through hell and back. The trauma he had when he was 8 years old, caused him to feel less of a man, depressed, angry, which led him to try to commit suicide by the age of 14 then tried again when he was a senior in high school then again when he was older. It is wrong for him to feel like he could not tell anyone because he is a man and Dominican. Diaz should have gotten the help he needed, being 8 years old and was raped. Just because a male got raped doesn’t make him less of anything. When he went to Rutgers, he started fresh again, but it did not last long. Diaz put a mask on to cover his past. When Diaz got older, he got the help he needed, he put the mask aside and got better over the years.

I learned that he was raped as a young child and it has effected a lot of relationships in his life. He had many relationships with women and cheated on them because of the fact that he couldn't face his past. He had a wife and she mad him comfortable enough to vent and tell her what happened to him but in his case it just made him cheat more on her. She divorced him and he became even more depressed than he already was and almost committed suicide . He's now getting therapy and taking it day by day.

I feel like a way Diaz had to escape the world or the bad thing that happened to him, like how people ignore problems and other things by listening to music or drawing, he would write. So writing was his salvation. Diaz wrote books using his own problems that happened to him to show people that, that is how life works and it can happen to anyone, but people can overcome it. There are similarities between the novel and Junot Diaz like:

Sexual assault was involved (Lola)

Both take place in a Dominican household

Depression that later on led to trying to commit suicide (Oscar)

Got help after certain things happened (Oscar)

Diaz didn't deal with his emotions causing his emotions kind of have this snow ball effect.
I learned that Junot Diaz had struggled through may things throughout his life, and he may have unconsciously been using his books as a way to reach out for help. I learned that in order for Junot to keep his sanity, he had to keep a mask throughout his entire life, keeping his past hidden. It was too painful for him to remember, therefore he had to push his feeling. He believed that having numerous relationships would heal his trauma. I can say that his story opened my eyes to the effects of abuse. Based on how well he was able to hide under his mask, it helped me understand that there really isn't a way to know if anyone is going through anything like this.

Diaz’s feelings are reflected through the character, Oscar de Leon when Diaz had depression and tried to commit suicide. Oscar got help right after that incident, but Diaz got help after many years have passed.
