Connections among teachers & their students are imperative. It's the teacher's responsibility to have many tools lined up in their toolbox to make these ongoing connections with each student in their class. We always have those students you connect with immediately, yet there are always a few whom need a little more tender care. These positive connections allow students to feel comfortable to ask questions, participate in class, share about self, & experience new activities. As the student-teacher connections develop & grow, students tend to give more of themselves, whether it's collaborating in the class or going the extra mile outside of class.

In every class of students I've had there are always students who are reluctant to raise their hands and share their thoughts and ideas. Providing a safe, caring learning environment is important in establishing our classroom community. Once students feel safe and heard they are more willing to share and contribute. Turn and talk works well for getting those students who are reluctant to talk in front of the whole class to begin to share with just another student. Once they know their voice is being heard and valued I always see them begin to take more risks and become more involved in our class conversations and activities.

If you give students the context of a situation they will readily have a 'voice' and be willing to share that opinion. The challenge for teachers is finding a good outlet for students that will actually make a real life impact. If there is a website with such ideas/resources, please add it.
- Belsan

The students need to know that what they do for their online work is valued and does matter. They need to be reminded that their learning is important even though school looks different right now. As teachers, we need to make sure that they know we want to communicate with them and help them have a great year.
