"The life she was given" by Ellen Marie Wiseman

It is a novel of family secrets involving two women of different generations. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I just say that a girl in 1930s is sold to a circus and the other in 1950s uncovers many lies about her past.
I would recommend this book, because for me it was a page turner, I could not put it down.
If you want an emotional story that makes you cry, as it did to me, read this book!

By Deborah Davis

I'd like to share a book that, at first glance, looks like a romantic or erotic novel but is not at all. It is a narration about one of the most infamous paintings ever created by an artist.

I liked to learn about the motive of the artist, John Singer Sargent, why he painted and repainted it like that. And the book gave me also the chance to have a look at the scandal it caused from the opposite sitter's side.

The story is set in 1884 Paris, and the tumult that was caused back then is comparable to today's hype of Instagram and being perfect and famous and liked by followers.

I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the fascinating art of oil painting, anyone who's ready to even go into further research in order to understand the society, the political influences and the people of that period after reading the book.

Ute Toppe

The Salt Path by Raynor Winn

This is a true story about a couple who lost everything. Money, house and farm. Only because they invested money in a business of a friend which went bankrupt. But this was not enough, Moth the husband of Raynor was terminally ill. Because they had not a lot of time anymore to spend together and there was nothing left from their previous life, they decided to go for a journey of 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall by foot. The author describes the physical complaints, the wetness, the cold, the hunger. The South West Coast Path is not a Sunday walking path. It is England's longest signposted long-distance hiking trail. It has a total of over 35,000 metres in altitude.

Wouldn’t it be easier to go for a social housing and to be on supplementary benefit? Maybe yes. But this path gave them back their self-respect.

This story goes straight to the heart. For me, never was a story of homelessness combined with the description of wild nature, stunning and dramatic landscapes. This book is heart-rending and beautiful in one.

I don't know if I would be so strong if everything was taken from me from one day to the next. But the essential message for me was that there is always a solution, no matter how hopeless the situation seems to be.

Judith Hutter
