"I know what you want. You want a story that won't surprise you. That will confirm what you already know. That won't make you see higher or further or differently. You want a flat story. An immobile story. You want dry, yeastless factuality."

the story with the other animals is the better story because it helps Pi overcome his hardships on the boat. Because Pi loves religion so much and has a great belief in God it is easier for him to explain the animal story and believe that the animals were real even though no one else believes or ever saw the animals.

Pi wants to believe in God and believe that he was not on the boat alone, being the only one fighting for his own life. He explains the animal story as the right and main story because it is the story he chooses to believe, even if it is not the most rational. This is the story that is told throughout the majority of the novel. Pi begs us to believe in Richard Parker because the story of surviving on a boat with a tiger is a better story than trying to survive alone.

"Tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you can't prove the question either way, which story do you prefer? Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals?"

The two interviewers have heard both stories and are confused as to which one they must believe. Pi tells them that they have no real evidence as to believe either of the stories, whether one is more believable than the other. So which one makes the better story? At this point in the novel, it is not a matter of which one is more factual, it is a matter of which one makes a better story and is more interesting to write about.
