The Mansions 1889

Every day, as I walk towards QUT Garden Point, I pass by the Mansion 1889. It's not directly part of the campus, but it’s always on my route, its Victorian facade standing tall and proud. I couldn’t help but be drawn to its intricate exterior, something about the elegant arches and ornamental details catching my eye. The contrast between the busy modern surroundings and this historic architecture always left me in awe. It wasn’t just a building; it felt like a glimpse into a forgotten time, waiting to be explored.

As I began my project, I decided to focus on its exterior. I started by making collages that captured the architectural elements that fascinated me. Layer by layer, I tried to convey the feeling of curiosity and admiration I experienced every time I passed it. The more I worked on it, the more I felt connected to the building, almost as if each collage was peeling back a part of its history. The process became less about the building itself and more about my evolving relationship with it, blending my perspective with the textures and forms I was studying.

The Pancake Manor

After admiring Mansion 1889 and continuing my journey, Pancake Manor became the next stop on my trail. Unlike the grand exterior of the mansion, what intrigued me here was the cozy, almost hidden atmosphere inside. Pancake Manor felt like stepping into a warm, welcoming space, filled with soft lighting and the aroma of freshly made pancakes—a stark contrast to the bustling streets outside.

When I decided to focus on the interior for this site, it wasn’t just about the architecture but also about the experience of being inside, the feeling of comfort and nostalgia it evoked. I wanted my collages to reflect that intimate atmosphere. I layered elements of wood and light, mixing textures that represented the warmth of the place. Every piece was an attempt to capture that moment of stepping away from the outside world and into this inviting haven.

As I worked, I realized that the connection to the site wasn’t just visual but emotional. Through each collage, I tried to recreate the sense of familiarity and the small moments of escape that Pancake Manor offers. It became more than a restaurant—it became a place where the personal journey intertwined with the comfort of the interior space.

As my journey brought me to Queen’s Gardens, I felt a shift—a space more isolated and subdued than the vibrant, welcoming stops before it. The solitude was intriguing yet uninviting, which inspired my design aim: to bridge this gap by creating an insertion that would make the park feel more inclusive and engaging.

My concept focused on using colored glass to play with light, casting warm, vibrant reflections across the park, and incorporating seating areas to encourage people to linger and connect.

This project required an understanding of how to work with scale and respect the site’s historical and cultural layers, adapting my ideas in ways that honored its essence. Through this process, I learned how to balance creativity with sensitivity to the site, envisioning a space that could enhance both its atmosphere and its appeal, while remaining true to its unique character

When I reached ANZAC Square, I was drawn immediately to the water features, reflecting a quiet beauty that I found soothing yet powerful. The water’s soft movements contrasted with the stoic monuments and symbolized for me a balance between memory and peaceful reflection. It was as if the water brought life to the otherwise solemn space, adding a sense of calm that encouraged a moment of pause.

In the center, the eternal flame burned steadily, embodying a powerful reminder of history and sacrifice. Standing there, I felt as though the flame and water together represented resilience and continuity. Both elements spoke to me in a way that felt deeply personal, reminding me of the layers of history that live within the city.

Reflecting on these details, I began thinking about how I might bring a similar feeling of warmth and depth into my design work. This visit to ANZAC Square reinforced my desire to focus on atmosphere and light in my Queen’s Gardens insertion, hoping to evoke a similar sense of calm and presence within the urban space.

Starting from QUT Gardens Point, my journey across Brisbane’s historical and architectural landmarks began as more than just a trail map assignment. Each stop along the way—from Victorian facades to serene parks—unveiled layers of the city’s character, sparking my curiosity and fueling my creative ideas. I found myself captivated by the stories these spaces held. This exploration has allowed me to develop a personal connection to each site I focused on, including the Mansion 1889, Pancake Manor, ANZAC Square, and ultimately, Queen’s Gardens. Each space contributed to my understanding of scale, atmosphere, and storytelling through design. My journey became not just a passage across a map, but an ongoing discovery of how architecture can shape, welcome, or challenge those who experience it.
