The Military Reconstruction Act AKA Reconstruction Act or 1867 was made in 1867. This Act was created to enforce the Fourteenth and soon to be Fifteenth Amendments in the Southern states. It was made when the Radical and moderate Republicans gained controlled Congress. The Act divided the Southern states into 5 military districts. It forced Southern states to allow African American men to vote and to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment to reenter the Union. Southerners probably did not this act because it enforced the African Americans rights that they were against.

In 1869 Hiram Revels (far left) became the first African American elected in the U.S. Senate. All of these men were some of the first African Americans in congress. The Fifteenth Amendment allowed African Americans to vote secured the position African Americans to be in Congress. This helped these men along with others to join Congress.

Since the end of the war things have gone very well for the African American population. I have now started sharecropping with old man Jenkins. Though I do not have very much money at the moment I will receive a percentage of old man Jenkins crop. Sharecropping does not seem fair because I am doing the work with the crop planting it and harvesting it in the fall. Though I get very little for doing the work only a small percent of the crop. However I have to, so my family can survive. The Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments have helped African Americans a lot. There have been some African American men who have made it into congress like Hiram Revels. The Military Reconstruction Act has also helped by enforcing the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments.

Sincerely,
Jimmy Johnson

With the recent election so close between Samuel J. Tilden and Rutherford B. Hayes, Congress has compromised. The Military Reconstruction Act that divided the Southern states into 5 military districts to enforce the law has now been lifted. The Southern states agreed to let Ohio's Hayes be the U.S.'s next president if they lifted the Military Reconstruction Act. Congress agreed and so the military is heading home. We can hope that the Southerners will still enforce the laws for African Americans.

No Reconstruction was not a success. Though Reconstruction readmitted the states and gave African Americans their rights it did not do all it was supposed to. Reconstruction had a couple of things to do readmit the states, reunite the states, give African Americans their rights, and lower debt.

Reconstruction was not a success because it did not do all that it could have or should of. No it did not solve any debt problems, Yes it did give African Americans their rights like to vote and to citizenship, but the South did not enforce any of these rights or the laws that came with them. Making these rights neglected. Yes Lincoln's and Johnson's plans did readmit all the Confederate states and they thought they were done but the connections were not established. Therefor Reconstruction did some good things but did not do all that it was meant to do.
