Weather and Climate feedback 04/20/21 by Vanessa Vales-Lewis

Co-Teach presentations are graded based on the Danielson Rubric Domain 3 Instruction, Competency 3c, and 3d: Engaging Students in Learning and Assessment. Let's offer our colleagues feedback on their presentations for the evening. Feedback should include ways in which improvements can be made for the final unit plan and lesson plan submission.

I like the whole thing and specifically the experiment part where it explained clearly the content and we all enjoyed it. In addition it put some questions on my brain to look for answers and provided some answers already. Thank you Shakima

The lesson was engaging and I am glad you provided lots of videos to assist with all the information being presented. That is a great way to visualize new information. Performing the experiment also connects all the new concepts together. Great job!

Some suggestions. Cut down on the amount of text in the slides or bullet it point them to make it easier for the students to digest the material. Encourage students to take notes, as there are so many good points that are made in the lesson. The first video had no words, so be aware that if students are taking notes, they are likely to miss some of the points in the video. Think about the length of the videos. The mind of young students wanders quick and fast.

Shakeema did great! I even had a jaw dropping moment when she did the experiment. The camera flip was a cool feature too. The first video that she showed; at first I thought she chose that video to test the students and to make sure you read all the captions because only music was playing so maybe it was meant to see if the students are actually paying attention.

Laura also did great. I actually enjoyed learning the 4 fronts and liked the video with cut breaks asking questions. The quiz was good too because it wasn’t too easy but fair. Although that music was giving me stress. I could not concentrate. When we asked questions, you were quick to give a response, so you knew what you were talking about.

Thank you both!

Lots of change up in activities, we video, we draw, we quiz, we watch experiment. Your change up game was on fleek (can I use that word).

Both Laura and Shakeema included engaging activities to engage the learner.

Grow: One grow is to have the vocabulary support for ENL learners, especially when introducing new vocabulary that will be used throughout.
Overall, I loved loved your lessons!!!

The use of visuals such as videos to supplement the lesson for both teachers was useful in helping students comprehend what was being taught. I also thought the use of formative assessments thoroughout both lessons and the summative assessments was effective in checking for students' understanding.

Shakeema, I enjoyed your experiment. I like how you gave us an opportunity to make predictions about what we thought would happen to the balloon with some water in it when some fire/heat was put into the jar with the paper you lit. It was a great way to understand that heat inside a jar makes the air pressure escape, and therefore makes the balloon slide into the jar. You also showed that blowing air into the jar using a straw helps to push the balloon back out of the jar. Thanks for the information about the double sided camera! It was a great way to be able to see us doing your experiment to understand air pressure more, as sixth graders, in my opinion should not use lighters to light anything. Your use of technology was so cool!

Laura, I enjoyed learning about the different fronts when it comes to predicting weather. I've heard about some of these fronts, specifically cold fronts and warm fronts when watching the news, so it's interesting to actually learn about them. I like how you had us individually identify the fronts on a map after teaching about it. Also, your use of the time to climb activity that you said Dr. Vales-Lewis introduced to you was fun! It was engaging! It was a great way to assess students about what they learned.

Both lessons were great! You both did a really nice job! They were both lessons that I think sixth graders would enjoy learning about. One grow for the both of you in my opinion, would be to allow for more check for understanding. Allow students to explain to you what they've learned or how they know an answer is correct. Or even if the answer isn't correct, how did they get to that answer or that conclusion? It's important to understand how students are coming up with their answers/conclusions/responses so that we can guide them towards comprehension, if necessary.

Thank you,
Barbara
