These specific groups came to Pittsburgh to escape poverty, famine, oppression and political disturbances.          <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Caption: Entrance to the Old St. Louis attraction on the Pike during the 1904 World Fair.</p></li><li><p>St. Louis was heavily impacted by the Civil war because of its location being the border between Union and Confederate territories. St. Louis was under Union control and faced turbulence in its economy due to the Mississippi River blockade.</p></li><li><p>St Louis has a lot of low hills and valleys. Due to its location close to the Mississippi river there are wide flood plains.</p></li><li><p>Some Major industries in St Louis during the Gilded age were flour milling, slaughtering, tobacco processing, brewing, and machining.</p></li><li><p>During this time a lot of people from southeastern Europe immigrated to St. Louis. Most of them worked in factories and sweat shops. They contributed to rapid population growth and the expansion of culture. </p><p>   </p></li></ul>]]></description>

Because of its location it is humid and foggy.</p></li><li><p>Some of the major industries in Boston during the Gilded age were banking, shipbuilding, textiles, and railroads.</p></li><li><p>During the Gilded age large amounts of people immigrated from Ireland, Canada, Italy, and Jews from Russia. Most left their homes because of crisis's and came to Boston to find work and a home. The different cultures all formed little groups in Boston. </p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Caption: Ferry Building at the Foot of Market Street.</p></li><li><p>Because of the civil war, extra Military protection was sent to San Francisco due the increase in the need for gold.</p></li><li><p>San Francisco is on the tip of a peninsula and has a lot of hills and small islands.</p></li><li><p>Popular industries in San Francisco included mining, shipping, railroads, and manufacturing.</p></li><li><p>Lots of immigrants from China, Europe, and of Jewish descent came to San Francisco during the Gilded age.  Most were following the gold rush while Jewish immigrants came before it and founded libraries and theaters. They invested heavily into culture.</p></li></ul>]]></description>
