I really like the idea of students using a self assessment chart to track their own expectations of performance. Especially for programs such like A3K, I think it's a great idea to have kids make their own goals for how many lessons they should complete and how much their Lexile should approve in a set amount of time. This way they're working to not let themselves down and can be more internally motivated to go the extra step.

Two questions/answers to my classroom would be A) If a technology problem then

I identify a technology lead for each group. When students encounter a technology challenge that they can’t resolve on their own, they can raise their hands and request help from the technology lead. I tell the technology lead to spend no more than 3-5 minutes working to resolve the problem. If they cannot figure out a solution in that time then the student encountering the challenge should move on to work on a paper based activity or should partner up with another student working in the independent station.

B) Leveled groups or other factors too?
Sometimes it’s nice for students to work in mixed groups, especially in the collaborative station. I have found that allowing students to work in mixed groups during the collaborative station, helps the groups to stay on track and accomplish activities that the lower group of students might not be able to complete if grouped homogeneously. This grouping strategy also provides opportunities for students to work with strong language models and it creates opportunities for peer-to-peer tutoring. That said, I try to group students in homogeneous groups for the direct station, based on data collected around students’ proficiency on the standard I am targeting in direct.
